OK ok so we all know the one about the Porsche 901 and the Peugeot lawsuit making it a 911, likewise that Ferdinand might have turned his hand to the odd PanzerWagen before the Beetle and the 356. But what else do you know that’s a bit obscure or a bit of a “fun fact” about our cars and the brand?

Post them up in this thread and you never know, maybe one of these factoids will be the elusive answer you need in the Xmas quiz!

I’ll start:

Ferdinand Porsche called his son Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche.

Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche called his son Ferdinand Alexander Porsche

Ferdinand Alexander Porsche called his son Ferdinand Oliver Porsche

Probably explains why its still called a 911 and still looks the same, not much imagination![

Another fun fact, Ferdinand Porsche, made the very first Hybrid in 1901. So I guess the Taycan has taken rather a while to develop.

Here’s one, we all know the Popular “Carrera” moniker from the back of the 911, chosen to celebrate Porsche’s success in the Carrera Panamerica.

Carrera in this way being Spanish and meaning “Race“ or “Racing”

Further up the 911 tree you have the Carrera RS, in this case RS being German and short for RennSport, which means Motorsport or Racing. So that car is the Porsche 911 Racing Racing.

Then, if we move over to the actual race cars, they’re called the Carrera RSR, the final R being English in this case and standing for . . . Racing.

Therefore, the Porsche Carrera RSR is short for Porsche 911 Racing Racing Racing - if that doesn’t mean spell business (or racing) then what does

And about the same amount of cable ties on my 944

The 1986 Porsche 944 was the first car sold in the United States with a passenger airbag as standard equipment.

This was at a time when most companies even charged you extra just to have an airbag in the steering wheel.

The 356 bodyshell was produced for Porsche by Reutter Carosserie-Werke who were located adjacent to the fledgling Porsche factory.

When the 901 (later 911) was conceived in 1963, Reutter were not able to invest in the tooling required to make the new model.

Consequently, Porsche purchased the car body building business from Reutter.

The remaining part of the original Reutter business was renamed Recaro and focussed on the production of high quality OEM seats for Porsche and aftermarket seats for other marques.
