Most of you could be forgiven for missing the Porsche press release of the new Cayman GT4 & Boxster Spyder yesterday, especially as it was rumoured that the big announcement would be made at Goodwood, yet strangely it was released rather quietly in the early hours of Tuesday morning. Some sceptics have several opinions and theories behind this but probably best we leave that there.
It is no secret that I love this brand but all this, “Sir, you need to have purchased x,y,z to even be considered to spend your hard earned cash on one of our special cars” is starting to wear a bit thin now. "Special cars"? Are all of our Porsches, regardless of age, type or era not special? I know they certainly are to me.
Even some of Porsche's biggest advocates and enthusiasts are openly opposed to this ridiculous lottery and sadly, I have to say, I am inclined to agree with some of their harsh comments.
I recognise, like any other businesses, Porsche Cars need to keep its top customers happy, but unfortunately with so few of these "special cars" available to us here in the UK, I will, as will the vast majority, just have to except it's highly unlikely most of us mere mortals will ever be given the opportunity to own one first time around.
Instead, some will inevitably find their way to some of those, who dare I say, will choose to keep these cars briefly before deciding they just aren't for them. I suppose, at least this means some of the true enthusiasts out there will get a second bite of the overinflated cherry, although sadly it's just a shame you won't actually get to pick the one you personally wanted from the metaphorical tree.
Enough of my soapbox ranting, I have to admit both models look absolutely stunning and will undoubtedly be an incredible drivers car. I am really looking forward to hearing the awesome sound of that 4.0-litre flat six first hand in front of me at a Porsche event in the future.
