997 Preventative Maintenance Costs

I was reading this https://www.porscheclubgb.com/forum/tm.aspx?m=1025955 and it got me thinking. What are the costs to fit a maintenance free IMS, a low temp thermostat (to reduce the chance of bore scoring) and a new clutch + RMS on a 997.1?

I currently drive a Cayman 987.2S but for not much outlay, I could sell it and get a 997.1S, which would get way more use. I'm wondering what it would cost to enjoy the benefits of a protected (never any guarantee) 997 without the initial outlay for a 997.2.

Cheers,
Bryan

I think it depends what yr 997 you are after, early 997s (2004 to late 2005) probably would have the early IMS bearing fitted which is changeable ,2006 reg onwards would have the later IMS bearing fitted which is NON changeable unless you rip the engine to bits , but is a much stronger bearing and very less likely to fail , Most 997s would have be sorted by now so don't worry about it , buy one and drive it ,it will probably be the best car you would ever own

Hi briggy. Lots out there that have been harteched at reasonable pricing. They do the bearing and liners plus lot of other future proofing. Portia craft have a lovely low milage black one in at moment. Convertible too. Would prob do you a good px deal.

Hi Briggy,
I recently took the plunge and bought a 997 c4s and absolutely loving it.

I must admit was worried about the dreaded IMS issues when looking around them. When I bought mine, The guy I bought it off had done some research. My car is Engine Number: 68606703 so no IMS issues. Engine (3.8) number up to M97/01 68509790has the older IMS bearing and Engine number from M97/01 68509791 has the larger revised IMS.

I would also check the paperwork to see if has had the bores checked and if there is any blue smoke on cold start up.

In reality though If it’s been cared for, regular care and service history you’ll be fine. Bore score only affected a very small percentage of Porsche’s. Circa 4-5% or so.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Matt
