Despite all you read on here and other forums you won't be disappointed you have bought a good car, the balance and performance are a good step forward from your current car, the only downside is the engine noise, what it does is great its only the noise.

When you throw it around on some good local B roads you know well you will realise what a good car you have bought.

Enjoy

I borrowed a brand new standard 718 Boxster when my 987 went in to OPC for service.

It was fantastic inside, great handling and the acceleration from the 2.0 turbo was a big increase over my 2.7 Boxster.

It was also fitted with the sports exhaust which made a few nice pops and burbles, but not like the flat six.

That said, it sounded a much deeper, more powerful sound tbh.

Fitted with PDK i was amazed by the shift speed, and it was so easy to just plant your foot and get to silly speeds very easily.

Would I have one if ?

Likely if I had the money.

Would it be worth the difference in money compared to the enjoyment I get from my 987?

Probably not.

Money no object though, I would be straight into the showroom to get a Boxster S.

Good choice Mike.

Keep the updates coming when you collect it

Just taken the leap into 718 land after not being able to find the right 981. I've gone for a Cayman S - photo attached - and I'm looking forward to seeing the differences against my 987.

By the way, as a consequence there will be a very nice (in my opinion !!!) 987 Gen 2 Cayman S up for sale in about three weeks. Two owners (myself for the last 7 years), 46,000 miles, Full OPC Service History and Full Porsche Warranty until April 2020.

Mike,

Way back in mid-2016 when I first ventured into the dark world of the 718 flat-4t I was in a very lonely place. Ridicule and derision was the order of the day.

The often repeated comments were along the lines of, "Why on earth would I give up my sublime 987 Cayman R manual for such poor substitute?"

At the time it seemed as if I were the only pinpoint of light in a very dark place indeed. The motor magazine hacks were absolutely scathing about the new engine.

A awful lot of water has since passed under that particular bridge and gradually, opinions, at least amongst the pragmatic enthusiasts, have softened towards the 718 and the flat-4 engine. Of course it'll never sound as good as the flat-six, but in all other respects it is a step forward in chassis dynamics, brakes, and technology.

Enjoy your new 718.

Brian

I see that the Porsche 2.5-litre flat-four turbo engine has won the 250 PS to 350 PS (184 kW to 257 kW) Best Performance Engine category in The International Engine and Powertrain of the Year (2019) Awards.

Last autumn I moved from a manual 987 Cayman S to a 718 Cayman S PDK. I loved the previous car and I do know what people mean about the sound especially at higher revs, but that is such a small part of whole package for me – the usability and handling of the 718 far outweigh any reservations I may initially have had.

I am sure you will soon wonder why you didn’t make the change earlier – and you’ll save a lot on Road Tax too (so even more to smile about).

I hope you enjoy your 718 as much as I do. May the (turbo) force be with you!
