Failed Instrument Cluster - Ouch!

The LCD display in my instrument cluster failed on my 991.2 GT3 (but this applies to all 991s). The dealers says a new cluster is required. They’re only supplied as a complete unit and are built to order to handle the large number of permutations for model, dial colour, mph/kph and all the rest. The cost of the part is £2600 and, worse, to fit it, the dash has to come out for a second time - it has already been out once to do a hard reset on the VTS - and that adds at least another £1000. Total cost? Around £4300 including VAT to replace an LCD display which probably costs £20 bought in quantity from China. Fortunately, my car is still under warranty but i would not be happy if I was footing the bill...

In this disposable age, the characteristic of much auto engineering is to replace, not repair.

I've no doubt that somewhere someone with a soldering iron, multi-meter and a modicum of knowledge would be able set this matter right.

However, this is yet another example of the prudence of the Porsche extended warranty.

Regards,

Clive

Yes, what surprises me is the LCD is not available as a separate component to swap over in the field. It’s the one element of the cluster which is likely to be model independent compared to, say, the Rev counter. Maybe it’s the difficulty of testing it once the change is made. My warranty runs until December 2020, I will think seriously about whether to extend it.

As I've posted elsewhere, the dash most certainly does not need to come out to replace the IP. It's a 30 minute job to physically remove and replace it.

After a quote from my local OPC of 2.2k to replace the whole cluster for one flickering LED, i took my the cluster to Cartronix (near Southampton) who replaced all the LED,s for about £150. They colour matched them to the originals this was about three years ago and have fine ever since, i thought they did an excellent job.

I ought to mention mine is a 996 and the instrument binnacle is easily removed.
