981 Cayman or Cayman S

Hi All,

I'm after some objective advice about the pros and cons of both models. My budget will just about stretch to a Cayman S and easily to a very well spec'ed Cayman. I can't see a huge issue with a loss of 50hp even though i'm a keen driver. What worries me is the lack of torque on the Cayman. I currently drive a sport diesel saloon, which has almost the same torque as the S and I'm worried i'm going to miss it. I know I'm comparing chalk with cheese here, but i'd really welcome some advice, preferable from someone familiar with both models. I essence, does the standard Cayman have enough torque or is it always revving it's nuts off. BTW, i'll be going for a PDK, which I guess makes a big difference (not having to manually shirt all the time).

Cheers,

Perhaps not a completely helpful comparison but I had a loan 981 standard car for a few day whilst my 987.2 S was being serviced and I found the lack of torque very noticeable. The loan car was PDK and if in normal mode felt very underpowered as the gearbox was always trying to get into as high as gear as possible. Sport mode was a lot better but the gearbox was certainly busy as in kept changing down to compensate to the lack of torque. Its probably true to say that you might not notice the missing 50bhp except perhaps in overtaking but I think you'll miss the torque, especially after coming from a diesel.

The S model has bigger and better brakes and maybe other chassis improvements, I'm not an expert on 981s.

Stretch yourself if you can to a S model, even if you have to go without some of the additional extras.

Best thing of course is to drive a few and see for yourself.

I came from a 997.1 into my 981 (non S) and was delighted that I had.

Of course my wife's BMW 4 series diesel has loads of torque compared to this and my previous tow Porsche's, or any other car I have owned come to that , but were talking sports cars here and not oil burners.

I bought my 981 new and absolutely love the car, how it drives, the feel, the sound (twin pipes not sports exhaust - ugh!) and the all round competent ability of the car. It held its own very nicely with much more powerful cars on the 1 track day I took it too (Anglesey) and being mid engined it was a sweet drive at high speed and cornered perfectly.

I cannot agree with Graham about it being underpowered at all, except if you compare it to a more powerful car like a 911 Turbo. The torque is fine and I have never, in 5 years of ownership, found it '..... very underpowered as the gearbox was always trying to get into as high as gear as possible ….' At 275 BHP it can hardly be said to be underpowered, but I suppose that's relative to what your used to.

20" wheels and PDK was just what the doctor order for me !! I love it and am looking forward to my trip to Florence, Italy in May, loads of usable luggage space and excellent mpg too!

Whichever one you choose you'll have some 6 pot fun!!

Thanks guys. I think I need to try both. I'm not overly bothered about the bells and whistles (other than PDK and almost certainly 20s) so an S should be a realistic option. Is the lack of wheel paddles enough to pass one by?

Thanks for your help. I Took the plunge and got myself an S in Basalt black, with 20s, paddles and the PDK 'box. It is a wondrous thing with a pebble/agate leather interior. I'm Very pleased. I've posted a couple more questions. And I'm sure there will be more :)
