good day to all

After getting rid of the vibration I now have another problem that has appeared the build up to it is as follows

drove car to work approx 20 miles no problem after about 2 hours drove car a further 6 miles and the generator/ battery light came on car was parked in carpark for about 5 hours then started no problem with no warning lights, after approx 4 miles the LED dash instrument (where warning signs show) started to blink this got worse and I noticed that the volt meter was pulsating at the same time between 12v and 14v
gen/battery light came on approx 3 miles later.
after doing approve 5 miles the psm inactive light came on then lcd panel when off and the dash lit up like a christmas tree and the engine stopped and I coasted to a stop.

AA came out and tried to jump start result nothing not even the starter motor clicking
removed battery (no mean feat by the side of a busy road!) put on new battery result as above
car recovered home Only 3 miles away
if the battery Which shows 12v is left connected the following is happening the engine cooling fans are running wipers will jolt turn the key nothing not even a click

only other thing to add on one occasion the press brake pedal light came on.

I suspect the alternator is duff but cannot understand why the car will not jump start any ideas please

Best regards and thanks for any suggestion

Nicholas

PS it is 05 3.2 Cayenne s

Hi Nicholas,

Sorry to hear you are having such bad fortune with the Cayenne.
Whereabouts are you located? I only ask because if you were convenient I may be able to assist with reading any trouble codes with my Durametric laptop software.
Other than grabbing Porsche codes my next port of call would be to confirm the voltage levels when unlocked and prior to start. Seems the cars are very sensitive to voltage so if you can monitor that before cranking that would be useful.
Also you’ve probably worked out that the ignition switch is ahead of its time and really just a switch that delays and asks for a start (similar to how more recent start buttons do)... so the crank is delayed assuming certain parameters are met. Sounds like one of the start conditions are not met... if so then the popular culprits are voltage, sensors like crank sensor (which should throw a code).
Of course check the fuses and relays also as those could have been blown.

Hi

I have checked all of the fuses and they are ok so at a bit of a loss I live not far from Spalding if that is near to you it would be much appreciated if you could help.

I have read somewhere that if the battery is disconnected then all the modules lose their memory and you have to leave the key in the start position for about a min before it will start not sure if this is true.

Nicholas

My 05 Cayenne i replaced the battery and had no problems with anything losing memory, BUT the 958 was a different story it meant a trip to the dealer to reset almost everything so next time I fiddle a battery tender will be used!
As to your new problem, it is a bit of a mystery.

Agreed on the battery replacement not causing a big issue from what I read in the past. I used to own a Cayenne turbo 955 model and although I never had to replace the battery myself, I read a lot about others that had done so without issues.
Looks like we’re quite far apart given the car sounds immobile - i’m in Herts.
Is there a specialist near you? I think it needs a code reader on it but my fear is that some Porsche specific module codes may not show on the average generic reader.

They are difficult to jump and 12 volts probably isnt enough, charge up a good battery to 13.7volts and try that. The electrics need full voltage to work on these, low voltage and crazy things happen, no central locking for one!

Hi Nicholas
I may be grasping at straws! but does your rear screen washer work?
Looking around the internet a few people have had electrical problems, rear washer stop working only to find the pipe had popped off in the door frame so water had been collecting under the floor mats and them causing the electrical faults.

Hi
yes the rear screen wash works fine the annoying thing is it was running super before it stopped I have seen a code reader that is supposed to be able to read all of the modules on the car (i carsoft for v2) so I will buy that before attacking the car,
I am thinking at the moment alternator and/or battery

UPDATE TO NONE STARTING

Hi all having put a new alternator on and a new battery (after 12 hours old one still wasn't charging I had another look and noticed that whilst the car was in park the dash showed that it was in drive , whilst I am waiting for a new scan tool I put my old one on and got the error code P0846 (TCM communication) after clearing this the dash showed that the car was in park But as soon as you try to start the car the error message comes back and shows drive on the dash is there a way of testing this.

the transmission was fine before it cut out no problem on up or down shifts

any help much appreciated

best regards

Nicholas

Hi Nicholas,

did you ever get this sorted? I am having a very similar problem and probably sending mine to the local dealer.

regards

Chris

Hi Chris

Yes I did get to the bottom of the problem eventually I assume that you have got a good battery on the car and there is no damage to the cables under the floor if so I suggest that you connect a scanner that will read the DME/ECU of the car (I use an iCarsoft POR V2.0) and see if you can access the fault codes if not then the chances are like me the DME/ECU has failed.

If the eco has failed I would contact the firm I used to repair mine, no reprogramming was needed just plug it back in clear the codes and away it [:D]

in case you need them the firm is Called ECUTESTING www.ecutesting.com it cost £314 a lot less than a new one from Porsche. let me know how you get on

regards

Nicholas

p.s. if you are near by I could put my scanner on if you like
