Engine rebuild and general TLC...

Good morning all,

Having used the forum in the past I haven't been on in years, so hi to everyone!

I've begun the process of extracting the engine from my 1989 2.7 944 auto to start a rebuild. I purchased the car 8 years ago back when they were cheap and I was young and possibly stupid to buy an auto! Thankfully I've also got a 986 which gives me my thrills so this is more of a relaxed car for Sunday drives. Shortly after buying the car I took the decision to replace the sills and remove any signs on rust, the bodyshop did an incredible job but months later the engine developed a knock. I was too poor at the time to get it sorted... and probably still am! It's since spent most of it's time in a barn. I've now decided to bite the bullet and start the engine rebuild. I don't know if this will work, but this is a video I took at the time of the noise I was getting - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DULFy5EubY

My question is a simple one, having only previously done services and worked on knackered old Land Rovers am I mad to try rebuilding my 944? I like to think I've got half a clue and have watched hours of youtube videos and studied the Haynes manual studiously (much to my fiancées disgust). Having said that it's a still a daunting prospect. That said I've invested in most of the tools (including a label writer!!!) and have got to the point where I'm about to remove the 4 bolts from the torque tube and drop the engine out. I've been shocked at how easy it's been to remove all of the bolts actually! Even the manifold bolts which I thought were going to be a complete nightmare came out perfectly.

Assuming I go for the rebuild bit what would you suggest I replace, clean or inspect while I'm in there? I was going to get the engine soda blasted, it's done 136k so it's probably a good job done. If anyone know's of a place they could recommend it would be appreciated! I live just outside Moreton-In-Mash so Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Warwickshire would be fine. A shopping list for parts would also be a helpful start if anyone has gone though the same process? This is all obviously pointless if the knocking has been a result of a horrible engine failure so I'll take a look inside first!

If anyone has any other top tips which might help please share!!!

Has anyone removed the two metal hoses carrying the auto gear box fluid alongside the cam tower? They seem to be rigid all the way down to the the torque tube and beyond so if anyone knows where they connect I'd love to know! They're in the way at the moment. I know this is a long shot but if anyone have the two of them to sell I'd love to know? Neither of mine look great, but one especially has taken a proper clout at some point.

I only live 5 mins from PCGB in Moreton so look forward to becoming a member once I've got it back on the road!

Thanks all in advance!

Ollie

If I had a 2.7 apart I'd be tempted to fit a 3.0 crank and some modified S2 pistons. Alternatively, if you get it apart and need some good 2.7 pistons and/or conrods I happen to have a set.
