Hi, have garaged my car for the last year and allowed tax, insurance and mot to lapse. Registered car as SORN. This was only because I’ve gone from using the car everyday to hardly using it at all since retiring. Now I want to get it back on the road again. First thing is to get it an mot. However, I believe because it has no insurance I am not allowed to tow it. I’ve looked up some temporary insurance sites who cover you for a single day designed for this experience but because of the type of car am struggling to get anything. Does anyone have any suggestions please other than ’ use it more’ thanks

Evening

Have you tried asking the garage if they have a flat loader or way of picking up the vehicle for you another way or on their trade plates maybe? (if that is an option, I'm not sure on legal uses of them for that)

I thought there was grace for having no MOT to get it to a garage, but if you're struggling with insurance, that doesn't help much I guess

Or, buy a years cover and cancel it Don't you get 14 days cool off period?

Hi

If the MoT test station is local and you know them will they drive the car to and from their premises on their motor trade insurance?

Perhaps a friend who has the driving other cars extension on their policy drive it there and back? It would I believe be third party only cover.

Could you trailer it there?

If you explain the situation to the insurer/broker who you intend to insure the car with, they may be willing to commence cover before It has its MoT test.

Good luck and I hope it passes and you can enjoy driving it regularly.

Roger

I stand to be corrected but there shouldn't be a problem insuring it without MOT, you can't tax it without one..... and as long as you have an appointment with the MOT garage this would allow you to drive it to & from for this purpose

Remember there are now new regulations for failures of certain items that do not allow you to take it away & return within 7 days for a retest

Who is your previous insurer?

Speak to them....

Sounds good, but clauses in insurance mean other people can only drive your car on ( 3rd party) if the car itself is already insured.

So if its not insured by the owner, then he can't get a friend to drive it on their insurance.

I'd ask the MOT station to come and collect and return it on their transport/ trade plates/ insurance

If you arrange your insurance cover on a normal 12 month policy and book your car in for the MOT you should not have a problem if stopped by the Police when driving directly to the MOT centre for the MOT. If you are in any doubt you can always ask your insurer if you are covered if involved in an accident on the way to or from the MOT centre for the pre-booked MOT appointment. I did this recently when recommissioning a classic car with no problems. My Boxster is insured on the Chubb scheme through Lockton who I can recommend.

Thanks guys. The reason I wanted to get a days insurance was to get it to the MOT station as I was always under the impression that the car must be insured to drive on the road. However, looking at the link that ts captain has sent looks like I am OK to drive to its MOT without the need of this insurance if it is pre booked. What's net resting though s what happens if you do have an accident? I think I may need to contact the delay on this one.

You must have insurance if you’re driving it on public roads.

Whether its SORN or not.

IF it’s SORN, you can still drive to a pre booked mot appt IF it’s insured.

As James says you MUST have insurance to drive a car on public roads. I can’t understand how you thought otherwise.
