Mileage cog?

Hi, just got my 968 out, first time this year, I’ve reset my mileage and it zeroed out, but now doesn’t clock miles, the speedometer still works, is this likely to be the plastic cog that has broken, read they are prown to breaking, thank you ??, Rob

I have sometimes over the years needed to re-zero the trip meter. Was the car moving when you zeroed the trip meter, they don't like that, has to be done ignition (?engine) on but stationery. If you were moving, it's possible the cog has stripped and you'll be pulling the binnacle.

If you do have to pull the binnacle, it's worth looking at the silvering for the instrument lighting, possibly needs re-doing, also at the 3 main instrument lighting bulbs and holders, the bulbs should be W3W but mine were changed by Project 9 to W5W which get too hot for the plastic holders. Luckily replacement holders are available from OPC, and I found packs of 10 W3W bulbs on Ebay, still have 6 left!

This might help if you do have to pull the binnacle!

Don’t put 5w bulbs In there, you will melt the plastic around the bulbs

That's what had happened to mine on the cab, thanks to Project 9, hence my comment above!!

W3w bulbs ordered off eBay, that’s the easy bit done ?

Have you got a link to the ones you bought? Are they 3W? Funnily enough mine stopped counting miles a day before I put it away for a few months or so, so I have the same issue and want to replace bulbs while Ive got it out. Ive got a link on the other forum so happy enough with what I need to do, I think I need one of these https://www.ebay.com/itm/...50b:g:teMAAOSwgQ9Vp5~b

I took mine to bits today, it was the small cog with couple of teeth missing, I just put w3w bulbs in eBay, £2.75 for 10, they are the main 3 bulbs not the numerous even smaller ones! Isn’t there anywhere in the uk ???? to buy the cogs? Rob

I would silicone grease them, as that should not affect the plastic

and as for UK supply I have never found one

New miniature cog arrived this morning, all in bits and back together, quicker the second time around, all working, a big thumbs up ??, Rob

Was it a steering wheel off job? Any guides you followed in particular, I need to get on with this too!

Didn’t have to take steering wheel off, I have a sport with the standard steering wheel, hardest bit was getting the wiring clips back on the right hand side, big hands, small space! Binicle slid out to the left, I got the small cog off eBay from your link, about £9 with postage,

You're not the first to say the binnacle can be removed without removing the steering wheel, but with the non airbag steering wheel it's so easy to pull the wheel off - pull the horn pad off, IIRC 24mm socket with short extension to get the retainer nut and washer out, that's it. Gives so much more room for messing with the binnacle! I also found some of the wiring was tie-wrapped for neatness, but cutting the tie wrap gave more room as well.

But mark wheel boss& shaft with typing fluid before pulling off the wheel-best also to park with wheels straight ahead.

Don’t think leaving the steering wheel on made any difference, some of the retaining clips where very stiff, they got some silicone grease too with a small paintbrush,
