1986 Tie Rod. UK parts???

944Volks

New member
Hi.
Well that was fun.......
after a year not running, and 3months at specialists.
Everything has been checked and double checked. Only on the second removal and testing of the ECU was the fault found.
Then the day car started it suffered a break in and stereo theft by some scumbag.
So its not been a great time of Porsche ownership. Lol.
But new year, new start, thought I'd get back onto the 944.
Took for MOT, failed on front nearside indicator fault, but that was just a bad earth..... easily sorted.
However got an advisory on some play in nearside steering Tie Rod, knuckle on the rack end.
Some (dodgy?) parts on ebay or expensive parts in USA.
Apart from Porsche dealerships, is there anywhere else to get good quality parts in the UK/EU?
Cheers.

Lemforder are OEM, about £80.00 + vat for the complete thing, easily available in the UK..............................[;)]

I use Eurocarparts mainly ( have a cash trade account) sometimes GSF-many people use Car Parts 4Less ( an ECP sub brand,I believe) & other local parts factors where necessary

Agree-Max at Frazerparts is also excellent very knowledgeable helpful & have used him on suitable occasions.

No such thing as a Porsche made tie rod
the rack is made by ZF, the parts for the rack are bought in from whoever they are dealing with at the time,

very very few parts are made by Porsche, bodies and engines are about it, the rest is sourced from third party suppliers

so the term OEM is just a general thing.

if your happy to pay massive increases in price because it came in a Porsche box,
like £100 for a £20 gates timing belt

There is OEM quality though and alternative parts that look similar / fit but aren't / don't last. Porsche can be surprisingly reasonable on some parts too as well shockingly unreasonable! The good independents like frazerpart are good at finding the oem equivalent parts at decent prices, the bad ones will just buy the parts from Porsche at a discount and mark them up to a higher price than going direct.

I agree there is obviously the crap from china and other places,

But Euros with Lemforder, and others are just as good, but swerve the crap disks from GSF, they go more wonky than Quintin Crisp

And just to give you a price guide, upto 1987 944.347.033.20 complete track rod with end Inc Vat from Porsche £124.20,
Boot PCG 419 831 C £6.08.

this is for the Power Rack, you do know that if you take the boot off, you can normally tighten them up a bit with a big pair of Stillsons
