Engine rebuild S2

I currently have an S2 engine that I want to have rebuilt. I'm looking for recommendations of some one to do it. I actually have two engines ,one in the car and a spare . I would ideally like to end up with one really good one and a pile of spares.

who would you use ?

Not sure of your location, but I'm very happy with Steve Bull Porsche in Wiltshire. Steve was a mechanic at a Porsche main dealer while the 944 was a current car, so cut his teeth on these. He's just completed a cylinder head gasket and front end rebuild on my 944s2 engine.

I’m in the south west of Scotland. The obvious choice for me would be Hartec in Bolton, but I was told that they are not really interested in doing 944’s anymore as most of their engine work seems to be rebuilding water cooled flat sixes.

This is the impression i got also. I called them 3 years ago before I knew about serdi U.K., in the hope they could do something about my cracked cylinder and they said they don’t do anything rebuildwise regarding the 944 line.

I had also also thought they would rebuild any Porsche engine, so I rebuilt it myself in the end and got serdi to do the new cylinder and balancing work aswell as skimming the head.

i don’t really know anyone else I could recommend unfortunately.

i think I only trust myself nowadays I’d like to think there’s still some soeacialists out there that are trustworthy with our pride and joys.

have you considered doing it yourself?

DIY fella, a great learning curve and taking your time and double checking will keep you right, loads of info out there, source any machining out.

DIY would be the most fun way of doing it. I was originally going to do that. I just want it done and done well. I can always play with the spare engine once I have the other built.

Depends what you mean by 'rebuilt'? I stripped down and rebuilt Ford Pinto and Essex engines, and removed, stripped and ported the head on my 87 Cosworth years ago. The Porsche 4 cylinder engine isn't quite as straightforward, and requires more attention to detail. Sure any competent fitter referring to the workshop manual could do it, but it takes time and that costs. Plus if the bores are worn that's another matter entirely.

Budget, and do you know how to gap the rings? I'm not trying to trip you up, but the Alusil cylinders are easily damaged.

I can do most mechanical work. But I’ve never built an engine from the bottom up. That’s why I want to find someone to do it for me.

I dread to think how much it costs to have someone build one of these engines for you, you may be able to find a complete car for less?

Pete

I had considered just buying a 968 engine and plopping that in.
I could also buy another secondhand engine and that would be a couple of grand.
Then by the time I do belts water pump gaskets inc timing chain etc. It’ll be the guts of a grand in parts. And another £4-500 if I need a clutch.
So if I rebuild one that I have I’ll throw a grand in parts plus some machining work. Powder coating etc. It’ll still not be cheap.
So maybe the best way to do it is to get an expert to put it together.

I think you either need to be loaded, or work on these cars yourself. If I couldn't work on my 944 I'd be running something much newer. I went out in a pals 5 cylinder RS3 recently, and it was fast. Though when we had a little comparison later he was quite impressed....[:D].

Yeah. It was a partial rebuild when I put it back on the road. I’ve removed that now. Lol
I didn’t do the rings and bearings. I did head gasket belts rollers seals waterpump etc.
But I still want a like new engine

I had mine rebuilt by EMC in Birmingham last year. Kevin completed the whole thing in 4 weeks and the price was exactly as he quoted [:)]

6000 miles later I am still very happy with it

I wouldn't mind a complete S2 head to go with my other garage ornaments....
