Ignition key stuck in ignition.

Hi there, I have a 2005 997 Carrera S tiptronic. The car has been sitting around for a while but after driving it the other day, when I parked up & went to take the key out of the ignition, a red warning light came on advising to select the gear lever to P. It already is in P. Now I can’t remive the key from the ignition.

I’ve tried switching the car off/on several times, moving the gear selector through the gears, disconnecting/reconnecting the battery etc. Nothing seems to work.

Has anyone else come across this?


 
hi I had that all I do is move the lever back to drive then back to park and mines fine again .I have found out where the gear cable goes into its holder on the gear box the plastic retaining clip had broke allowing it to move .Repaired it all is fine now

I had the same problem a few years ago with our 996 C2 Tip.

We had just arrived at Anglesey Circuit and parked up and found the key could not be removed from the ignition. Fortunately OPC Chester staff were there with the new 991.1 demonstration models and Centre Principal Carl Hazelton got in touch with his workshop manager. The key was finally removed using brute force but the problem was not solved as the key became stuck each time it was re-inserted. The outcome was that Carl drove our car back to Chester OPC and arranged for the ignition barrel to be replaced under our 3rd party warranty, meanwhile we completed our Anglesey/Llandudno weekend in Chester's 991.1 C2S demonstrator. Amazing service from Porsche Centre Chester staff considering we had never met before!
 
Blimey Paul. Good service on the loan car BUT I’d not be happy with any brute force to remove the key. There’s always a reason why something sticks. Fix the reason don’t overpower it.

"firm persuasion" might have been a better choice of words!
Imagine the situation - nearly 500 miles from home, Saturday afternoon, no way to remove the key and consequently no way to lock/alarm the car. Rock and a hard place spring to mind. OPC Chester's response was quite extraordinary.

Raz,

If the problem's not related to the shift lever but your battery is only marginal you can remove the key mechanically. Have a look in your Driver's Manual under Ignition Lock/Steering Lock - there's a section Emergency operation - releasing the ignition key. It's page 56/57 in my 987 Cayman Manual and should be much the same for your 997.
