New tyres advice please

Hi, I'm new to Porsche ownership and the club (just joined) with a 2005 Boxster 987. Been told I need to have N rated tyres and was hoping someone could point me in the right direction with brands and deals. Tyres on the car are almost new but are only H6 rated whatever that means. I have been reading lots of threads on the whole N rated thing and decided I should go with what Porsche recommend but still want to have some money left in the bank.
Any advice gratefully received. I live in Beverley, East Yorkshire.

Good evening and welcome to the club and Porsche Ownership,

N rated tyres as you've no doubt discovered are the ones that have been specifically designed to Porsche's specification. You will have read varying views as to whether to use them or not. I am not about to enter that debate, but will simply state my eyes were opened when we had a Club talk from Pirelli. With their tyres whilst all P Zero's or whatever of the same size all externally look similar they actually have radically different construction depending on what marque of car they are for. i.e. the N rated Porsche ones will be very different in construction from an Audi one.

I am not sure what H6 means in tyre terms, but to find our what N rated tyres should be fitted to your car Porsche give a list which you can find HERE

As to suppliers and deals I am not familiar with tyre companies on the north bank, but I usually google the usual tyre suppliers, and local ones i know to see who is doing the best deal. On this side there is a tyre firm called Bush Tyres who are reliable. If you go Pirelli I think there is a deal with PCGB for you to get a fuel voucher if you use a Pirelli Performance Tyre fitting centre.

I hope this helps.

I got my Michelins from there earlier in the year, proper N rated tyres, front and back.

Happy with them so far.

I've just bought all season tyres from them this week for the CR-V

As the gents say above.....but as an anecdote, when I purchased my CS, it came with N rated tyres, Michelins front, Bridgestones rear, they were a few yrs old but plenty of tread, handled track days etc well.

Over time I've replaced both ends with Michelin's (non-N rated)....IMHO the car now handles as a minimum, just as well. If you go the "N spec" route, you'll have a more limited (thus easier!) choice of shoes for your Boxster. Forums like this will have old strings you can search for, where tyre suggestions etc are discussed. Happy driving (even over Winter!)

Thanks for the reply. Am still looking into this huge subject and looking through old forum topics. Tyres seem to come up quite a lot !

Hi Phil,

And welcome. There's a discussion taken place in recent months in the 996 section, and a few others, that talk tyres too, that include 'N' and also manufacturers. Personally, I go for Mich Pilot Sports for less tyre noise and the added benefit of the over lap, meaning the tyre protrudes more over the alloy, giving you a little bit of added protection against kerbs etc. When you've decided on 'n' or not, then pick your make. Two threads below are very recent and cover N, makes and prices.

Good luck lol :)

Hi Phil, Once you have decided on which tyre you want contact your local OPC to get a price then your local tyre dealer. If there is a difference in price see if the OPC will price match. I did this recently and managed to get £50 off per tyre plus the Pirelli loyalty card. So then fitted by Porsche for peace of mind.

Just want to say a big thanks for your replies to my post on this subject. We've recently returned from NZ where I purchased the Boxster. It was first registered in Japan and I was the first owner in New Zealand. Don't recall tyres with N rating over there, anyway the tyres on the car are almost new, (and don't laugh) Nankang AS1s.

Had my car Waxoyled by my local specialist in Leeds and they pointed out that the tyres were not 'N' rated.

I have decided to leave it for till more clement weather comes our way and will then likely put some new boots on it.

thanks again for the replies, a very pleasant welcome to the club.

cheers

phil
