993 3rd brake light query

Hi All,

I have a '97 993 C2 coupe. It doesn't have the 3rd brake light fitted (the one that runs along the top of the rear screen) -although it does have a factory-fitted 'dummy' with no actual light inside. I am thinking of taking the opportunity to add a working 3rd brake light. I first thought about doing this a couple of years ago but came across a couple of issues. Firstly, a new OPC brake light will not fit properly in the 'dummy' housing that is already fitted, so I will need a new housing and have that sprayed. The second issue that I realised when I was previously trying to fit a 3rd brake light is that because my screen is clear along the top where the brake light sits, when the brake light is triggered there is quite a lot of red glare that enters the cabin which is quite distracting to the occupants. These issues put me off the idea a couple of years ago but now I need the rear screen replacing for other reasons, and some paint work doing, and I am thinking that I might revisit the idea. So, my question to anyone with a 993 with a factory-fitted working 3rd brake light is: is there some sort of tint or strip that runs along the top of your rear screen which blocks glare from the light entering the cabin? My local OPC tells me that there is only one rear screen available for the 993 and it is clear along the top of the screen. If there is no strip/tint to block the red glare, do you notice this and is it an issue?

Many thanks in advance,

Andy

Afternoon, Andy

Mine has the 3rd brake light (factory-fitted) but have never experienced any of the difficulties you mention. Yes it glows when in operation but never a glare or such that it interferes in any way, even at night-time. But I can't see why the OPC light you mention doesn't fit inside your housing - AFAIK Porsche didn't make any other version of the lightstrip??
As regards your other problem - no, I believe no other versions of the rear screen will have a top strip or tinted but in your case, just get an extra wide strip of thick duct tape in the colour of your choice and stick it up there carefully on the inside and likely that'll sort it fine [;)] .

You need the housing for a spoiler with lamp 993 504 455 020 70C at £121.12 and the light at 99363106000 £217.36

Nothing would need painting

Its cheaper to buy the whole spoiler kit though 00004480012 at £320.18, then you will have a complete spoiler kit like you have already on your car left over to sell!

Wiring should be under headliner, unzip and plug in

Worth getting the Bergville FX LED light board and replace the incandescent bulb one

3 options on the rear screen for your car from OPC

99354510712 No wiper £732.79

99354510713 With wiper £732.79

99354510707 RS thinner glass no wiper £819.01

Supply sunglasses to passengers if they have sensitive eyes!

Hi Andy,

did you confirm the wiring was definitely there ? I have a 1996 C2 and interested in doing the same thing, but I had read somwhere that the cars aren’t necessarily pre-wired for the third brake light ?

thx

I had my 3rd Brake Light removed when I found out it wasn't Factory, but an ownership install.. Turns out the wiring was hacked into the Rear Screen Rubber Seal, compromising it, so it was a no-brainer to remove it.. I do prefer the cleaner lines without it..

My first 993 had no 3rd brake light - the roof spoiler was there but there was a flat blanking plate where the light bar goes. The wiring was in place so I sourced just the light bar. The odd thing was, the central part of the blanking plate could be removed leaving space for the light bar, but its sides were square rather than rounded to allow flush fit of the light. I ended up just using black draft strip to infill the gap. Never noticed the red glow though.

Hi there

I know this is an old post but here goes......

I've just lost the cover for my 3rd brake light. I don't know what happened but after a 55 mile drive, the cover had simply jumped ship.

If you still have your brake light would you consider selling me either the cover (ideal for me) or the entire kit?

Thanks in advance
Phil
