Removing standard steering wheel from 997.1 Tiptronic

I have bought a new steering wheel with paddles for my 997.1 Tiptronic, it came with full instructions both for removing the standard wheel and fitting the new one.

I am having problems locating the head of the T30 screw through the hole in the rear spoke of the steering wheel to release the airbag.

There appears no way of seeing the head of the screw, and I cannot feel the head of the screw even with a smaller T25 torx.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Don't think there is a screw as such. Turn wheel 90deg clockwise (LHD) maybe other way for RHD. Porsche recommend T30 or small screwdriver as suitable size to release catch, just push in to release catches.

Thank you for reply, which I have tried, but without success yet, I am either using wrong technique or just not strong enough.

I had positioned wheel straight ahead to make fitting new wheel in correct position easy. As suggested I may be able to exert more pressure if wheel was turned.

Can I reinsert the key to enable me to turn the wheel with the battery disconnected without causing any problems.

Instructions are very clear to remove key after battery disconnected and not replace key until battery is connected again.

You have to pull on the air bag with finger tips at the same time as applying pressure with tool. The picture I have show 4 little catches which need to be disengaged, all should move across together.
Send me your email address and I'll send you page from workshop manual. Can't post here because of copyright.

Hi, I would like to change the steering wheel on my 997.1 Turbo, from tip to paddles, is this possible?
thanks.

Hi

Yes you can fit a wheel with paddles, the one I fitted I bought second hand, it is made by atiwe specifically for the 997.1, I do not know if these are still available.

I believe you can fit a Porsche steering wheel from a 997.2 or possibly a 991.

There is a lot of information on 911uk.com, this is an excellent forum, free to join and when you have joined you can search previous threads.

Hope this helps, but if you have any further questions please don’t hesitate to ask.
