Osnabrück Factory Tour?

I'm going to visit a friend in Rheine, Northern Germany, which is close to Osnabrück where the Cayman is built. It's the old Karmann factory and I believe VW use it for assembling certain vehicles and Porsche may still use it for Cayenne assembly as well as the Cayman.

I can't find anything online but does anyone know if factory tours are available there? I'm aware that the Club has visited the factory in the past as part of the annual organised tour which may have been arranged specially. Ralph, I think you may have gone on that tour?

I believe Porsche moved all Boxster and Cayman production to Zuffenhausen in Stuttgart, when they switched to the 718. In the days of the 981, all Caymans and most Boxsters were made in Osnabrück. Not sure what the old Karmann factory makes now.

Jeff,

Yes I went in 2015 immediately after collecting my 3.8'd Cayman. If you look back on first GT4 thread you'll see I commented in their build volumes, press shop to complete car and line flexibility for GT4 v cooking Cayman shells.

As for tours, when we were there it was a fairly unique event but they may have improved since then. Suggest you reach out to Richard Watling and he might know current situation or give you some names to enquire of.

His email address is visitporsche@btinternet.com or maybe factoryvisit@porscheclubgb.com is better

If you look at the Porsche Approved for Sale site you will see some 718 Caymans with Stuttgart and others with Osnabruck VINs, including 2018 builds... I think you'll find 981 Boxsters were Stuttgart, but a sift thorough VIN of those for sale will help confirm or otherwise.

Yes Ralph, I've a feeling that with the introduction of the 718 Cayman Porsche decided to move all sports car manufacture to Stuttgart then reversed the decision when they ran out of capacity there and started up the Osnabruck line again.

Thanks for the Richard Watling links.

My 2017 build 718 Cayman has an Osnabrück VIN number, I 'translated' it not long ago as I was curious about it.

Interesting, I had no idea some 718 production had gone back to Osnabrück. My January 2018 build 718 Cayman GTS was certainly a Zuffenhausen car. I remember on my tour of the Zuffenhausen factory in December 2014 being told that only a small percentage of 981 Boxsters were made there, with most being made in Osnabrück.

Probably to make space for the Taycan which is being built at Stuttgart in the space that was the new car handover hall.

Jeff, When I did a trip to Stuttgart in a group I organised a few years ago we managed to get a trip around the Stuttgart factory, I'm unsure if the Cayman production is now in Osnabruck but I am planning on a trip to Stuttgart with several other stops on route including the Schumacher exhibit in Cologne, Sinsheim and other venues to take place next summer out of school holidays. Osnabruck is not far off the route so another venue can be added for any who wish to join in.
