Headlight cluster coming loose

Hi,

I have replaced the headlamp bulbs in both of my headlight clusters over a year ago. Since then, the drivers side headlight cluster intermittently comes (fractionally) loose and loses connection - mainly on the front indicator. I have taken the cluster out and reseated it a couple of times and it engages properly when locking it back in place with the socket/tool from within the frunk. However, within a few months or so of reseating it, it will work itself loose and then the indicator won't work until I reseat it again (or just push the cluster back/down slightly). Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Or have any thoughts/insights into what could be causing said problem?

Many thanks for any help in advance,

JK

Are you sure the rod has locked it in place properly? I found it always made an alarming crack as the rod reached the locking position.

You've got me worried that neither side is locked in properly now Richard! I don't recall there being any loud/obvious noises once it locked in place and I've not had a problem with the passenger side, so I'm assuming that one is fine. I'm going to take them both out today/tomorrow depending on weather and workload and then reseat them and lock in place using a socket wrench rather than the flimsy tool from the in car tool wrap.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that a 5mm hexagonal socket is the one?

As you turn the tool the resistance to turning increases and then there is a loud bang as the locked position is reached. If you haven't heard that I suspect neither is locked properly. I've never had a problem with the supplied tool.

During a spirited drive in my 2005 Boxster S at the weekend including a short stretch of rough road surface my nearside indicator stopped working and I thought it was simply a bulb that had failed, however, a message appeared telling me to check the headlight alignment. It then struck me that I’d had the headlight units out to change the headlights to the U.K. setting after a trip in mainland Europe. I checked and sure enough the headlight appeared to be protruding at the bottom by about 1cm from the correct position. Using the supplied tool , which I haven’t had any problems with, it took only about 1 minute to lock it into place. Clearly I’d failed to do it properly last week - note to self "Can and must do better”. Maybe I was being too gentle.
I’m sure if you follow the advice from others yours will lock and you will not have further problems.
