This thread is for the Caymans & Coffee meeting on 28th October, 10:00 - 12:00 (remember the clocks will have changed!) - Please check the list of attendees shown below and let me know by PM or posting on this forum thread if I've made a mistake with regard to passengers, your requirement for food, if you want to join a GHC tour (see below), or if you can no longer attend.
Location: due to a car boot sale of which I was unaware I have had to change the original location of 'The Departure Lounge', we are now going to The Lasham Gliding Society at Lasham Airfield which is about 5 miles away, details on how to find it can be found at the end of this message. Although the cafe at The Lasham Gliding Society is open to the public it is in fact a members club therefore we have been asked to adhere to certain conditions so as not to impede their members, details below.
Cafe: So far approximately 42 attendees have said they want to buy food in the cafe. The cafe cannot cope with that number of people all wanting food at the same time. They have agreed to reserve a 10 seater table for us, it is located just inside the entrance and will be marked for us - I agreed that we would only order our food if there was a seat available on our reserved table. If the restaurant is not too busy with gliding club members then a 6 seater table may also be available to us, there is also outdoor seating on the patio. The main thing is that we should avoid having too many of us queuing for food and drinks at the same time so if we can stagger our use of the cafe then all should be fine.
Gliding Heritage Centre: At a cost of £5 per person we have been offered a tour of the Gliding Heritage Centre which takes about 45 minutes. These tours normally take place at 2:00p.m. on a Sunday but special arrangements have been made for our tour to start at 11:55 which conveniently coincides with the end of our meeting. I'm hoping that most attendees will join the tour as I know that the gliding club have specially organised additional volunteer guides for us - The £5 entry fee goes to the Gliding Heritage Centre charity and would be a nice way for us to thank the gliding society for their hospitality. Please PM me or post on this forum thread if you're interested in joining this tour. Note the 'directions' below.
Directions:
If using satnav please drive to GU34 5SS, on the "Avenue” to find the main entrance. As soon as you turn off the road into the airfield our allocated parking area will be found on the right. Using the following Google Maps link that parking area is shown on the left (google view is upside down) https://goo.gl/maps/1sRnaosMs8H2. Please do not park in a way which will impede the Gliding Society members or airfield users.
* From the West, Alton or Basingstoke: If coming off the A339 follow the brown "Lasham Gliding Club” sign turning off at the sharp corner in The Avenue, avoid the first (almost immediate) right turn signed to the airfield – as this will get you stuck against a gate which the gliding club don’t control. Carry on approx 500m along The Avenue and the entrance will appear on your right. Turn in, and there is a gate (double barrier) ahead - don't go that far. Ignore the visitors car park on the left but look to your right behind a memorial stone and big hedge where there's a further concrete area which we can use so keeping our cars separate from other visitors.
* From the East, Odiham, Golden Pot pub: Drive along The Avenue passing the garden centre, the junction with Church lane (which you will use for the GHC tour later), the airfield hangars on your left, and then arrive at the entrance on your left. Turn in, and there is a gate (double barrier) ahead - don't go that far. Ignore the visitors car park on the left but look to your right behind a memorial stone and big hedge where there's a further concrete area which we can use so keeping our cars separate from other visitors.
Directions for the GHC Tour: Departing the car park area at 11:55 we will need to drive around via the Avenue and Church Lane to the Eastern gate where we will be allowed entry in a group to park near the GHC hangar, exiting via the same route afterwards.
