Following a pre-set route in your PCM

If you have PCM 3 or higher in your Porsche and one of the newer Iphones, it's now possible to plan, upload and follow a pre-set tour in your PCM, accompanied by audio directions from a rather stern sounding lady, called Carol! [&:]

You will need the Apple car app on your PCM and update your iPhone with the latest software iOS 12.0 available from last Monday. Simply select settings from your phone's home screen, then in the settings menu, scroll down and select "General", then "Software Update". Note:- you will need to have your Iphone connected to mains power for the installation to complete. You also need the latest version of Google Maps V5.0 available free from one of the online stores.

You can now plan a route on your computer, send it to your iPhone, plug the phone into your vehicle's USB port, select "Appleplay" then "Google Maps" and your route will appear on the screen. Press the start button and away you go!

If you're taking part in the R15 Southwest Autumn Tour on 30th and would like the two Google map references for the whole route (am & pm) to upload, I'd be happy to send them you. Just contact me at lancerlot@hotmail.co.uk or Alan at R15@porschecludgb.com .

Clive

Why or why do Porsche and other car manufacturers just allow us to import .gpx files into the car’s sat nav? I. An so this with the BMW branded (actually a Garmin) on my motorbike. All I then do is plan a trip/route in Garmin’s Basecamp softwRe and download it to my Garmin-made satnav.

i end up with a stand-alone satnav perched on my dashboard when on my holidays. And the standalone garmin has the added bonus in that it allows speed camera databases to be loaded

Clive,

How do you put the Apple car play app onto a PCM 3, I use to have the app in my old Cayman S when I fitted a Pioneer unit, I thought the car play app was only installed on Porsche PCM 4 onwards ?
Not sure if its just the case of plugging in the I phone or not as I only ever use Bluetooth for my phone, contacts. with all my music loaded on a USB stick, but this could be handy if it can be done on a PCM 3 ?
regards

On your iPhone select settings/general, car play. If there is no Porsche showing on that, you will need to plug into your USB in the centre console of your car, then you should be able to connect. You should have a screen come up with an option to connect car play

Interesting. I have PCM 3.1 in a 2013 981 Boxster S. I've installed iOS 12 and tried Clive's instructions, including plugging in the phone to the centre console. No joy. I don't think the car supports CarPlay, and to start the setup, CarPlay on the phone says "press and hold the voice control button on your steering wheel...". I don't have one of those, and looking at the PCM instructions, it is supposed to be on the end of the indicator stalk. On my car, there's just a dummy. So I suspect there's a bit more to it than just PCM3. But thanks for the info - definitely worth the discovery process!

With PCM 3.1, you need a retrofit Apple CarPlay kit to provide interface with iPhone.
Google will provide you with more info.

Clive

PCM 4.0 now accepts .gpx and .csv files.

Yep it might as POI but not complete routes. I'm now trying to use Google Maps and Apple Carplay as per a previous post.
So FRUSTRATING!!

No, you're right you can't currently upload a complete route into Porsche navigation, hence my first post regarding Google maps and Appleplay. It might however be possible at a later date.

In PCM 4.0 you can upload your POI's via the Porsche portal, then use them to compile your tour. Alternatively, plan the route on a laptop, then duplicate it manually into the PCM and save it in "Favourites". A bit of a faff, but you do retain all the useful Porsche nav. features. [:)]

Hi Clive,
Do you know where / how to get the speed camera GPX files to load onto PCM?
Many thanks
Steve

Hi Steve,
The main criteria is to have a Porsche Connect Portal registration to log in to from a web browser.
There are 5 files to download to the portal, these are spec.gpx, mobile.gpx, pmobile.gpx, redlight.gpx, gatso.gpx.
Crymo has kindly provided detailed instructions on how to transfer the files into the PCM and you can find these using this link.
Regards,

Clive

Thank you. I couldn't find the GPX files but have now worked it out and downloaded from PocketGPSWorld.com.
Many thanks again
Steve
