evening just wondeering if any can shed some light on a tapping/ light knocking sound on my 2.7 2003 boxster it starts and sounds perfect then when up to temp it starts making the noise but only on idle raise the revs abit and it goes the car is very well serviced and has only 23 k on it
kind regards paul

I had something similar on my 897.1. Typically happened on two scenarios, oil 8+ months old, and or when car has been standing for some time..

The best way i'd describe my noise - a sticking tappet that needed oil, like it was blocked....once warmed up and given a good thrashing it went....always seem to happen when the oil was older...

LOw mileage is not necessarily a good thing on a 10 year old Porsche. Require oil changes are an absolute MUST

Sticking tappet is usually when its cold.

Drain a bit of oil out and check for metal. Unlikely but is a cheap test. Or just change the Filter and check for metal. Has the oil been changed recently

WAter pump can make noises as it begins to get to the end of its life

Morning its just had a full service oil that came out was like new with no bits gonna check the aux belt and the water pump going to run it up to temp with out the belt on to check

Hi Paul ,
My 06 3.2S does exactly the same thing, although it does have 93k on the clock. Full service history and oil changed every year. I was wondering if the idle can be altered slightly to stop the noise?

Paul,

Giving the engine a good blast when fully warmed-up may help to clear any sticky tappet issues. Checking the auxiliary powertrain for noise sources also would be a good call.

Just remember that the flat-6 configuration is very prone to "tappety" noises. The sound escapes readily from the sides of the car, much more so than with a conventional in-line arrangement where the engine is encased.

Hi chaps took the aux belt off tonight made no difference put a new one on , did notice tho with both covers off i couldnt hear the noise hardly its most noticable at the back of the car , all the pulleys and pump are smooth as silk and no play , i spoke to hartech and he said they all make that noise your describing , what a nice bloke to talk to very helpful

I’m glad you’ve contacted Harteck. Grant is a genuinely nice and honest guy who is so helpful. He rebuilt my engine earlier this year and was a dream to deal with start to finish, I’ve had the need to speak to him a couple of times with quiries about onward maintenance and he is always so helpful. most importantly he knows his stuff and if you get the chance his workshop is worth a visit.

Forgive my ignorance, but are Boxster engines a hydraulic valve train?
certainly, some hydraulic tappers can tick when cold and the oil has drained a touch?

My 981 3.4 has a fast ticking when hot at idle - but can't hear it inside the car even with the roof down, it's most noticeable at either side near the rear wheels. My previous 981 was the same - I think it's normal.

Hi, I see you’ve spoken to Grant at Hartech, top man , I had same issue with 987 3.2s as well ,but also had scoring in the bores, Hartech rebuilt my engine from top to bottom , fantastic to deal with and there is nothing they dont know about porsche engines. Runs like a dream now.
however Grant did tell me that if The tapping sound your hearing does disappear when you up the revs a bit you can increase the idle speed but it’s done through the ecu and that’s not straight forward as these are not easy to access apparently but it can be raised a little to get rid of the Tippett sound. Also it may be worth noting that the low speed oil pumps on these engines are not up to much so on idle there might be starvation of oil to the tappets which would explain the noise on idle and disappearing when you tap the accelerator.
I would check the bores on your motor to iliminate that problem as well.

Hi craig how many miles had your motor done ? Ive had all the covers off and seems less noisey when right next to engine iam thinking a exhaust or gear box noise as it seemsmost noticiable stood at the rear of the car ebut trying to stop being paranoid about it and enjoy the car.
Paul

Hi Paul, mines done 90,000 miles.
Dufficult to sumise about yours without actual hearing it I think..Have you asked anyone to listen when you’ve been at a PCGB monthly meet...many wise old sages in attendance at these lol...usually...!

Hi craig no i havent the more i think logicaly about it the less iam concerned now but gonna let grant have a listen next thursday but also thinking of changing oil to the millers 10-50 that hartech recomend i want to get to my next monthly meet to meet the local guys

hi guys just an update had it checked by grant at hartech he test drove the car and reported everything is how it should be and normal phew lol
