Time to change the car

Hi All

ive owned my 991.1 GTS for 2.5yrs now and loved every minute, taking it on Europen tours, Millbrook, Silverstone and various other road trips.

The car now has 16k miles and registered in 01/16, will run out of warranty in January, hence I’m thinking of Changing.

I want something a bit different so have narrowed down to a 991.2 Turbo or a 991.2 GTS Targa And would welcome any views from owners.

i love the look of the Targa, but bit worried about whether dynamically it won’t reward on a Sunday morning drive given the weight penalty.

ive always dreamed of a Turbo having had the obligatory poster in the wall as a kid, but bit worried about that I really love a Sunday morning drive on a twisty B road and will I be doing stupid speeds to get any kind of feeling that I’m driving the car.

i could always buy a new warranty get my 991.1 GTS serviced and keep it...

Thoughts welcome

interesting call, always had Porsche’s but the 458 is a bit of a petrolhead nirvana. Only downside is usability on European tours and my wife really doesn’t like red Ferrari’s. Plus I worry it’s too wide for the typical B road.

If it's for a fun Sunday drive on a twisty road get a Caterham! If you want one that will do everything, including keeping you dry, the 991.2 turbo is a good place to start.[:)]

Just had a 991.2 gts/4 on loan for the weekend and loved the it .only thing was the exhaust has a very different noise to my 991.1

Is the cost of change really worth it when you already have one of the best cars in the range for extended road use and a few track days thrown in.

I changed my 2 year old 991.1 Carrera GTS to a 991.2 Carrera 4GTS and, in my opinion, it's a much better car, it responds faster, drives quicker and in the process uses less fuel so it goes a lot further on a tank of fuel. Yes, the sound is not quite the same but all you really miss is the induction roar which frankly became a bit annoying on a long drive and with all the other improvements, Rear Axle Steering, PCM 4 etc. I would never go back. Mine is a high spec and for the same money I could have bought a Turbo (not the S) without the expensive options I have (PDCC, PCCB, Front Axle Lift, Glass Roof) but the GTS just felt much more usable on public roads and you can exploit the full rev range with a very nice accompanying engine sound track. At 45mph on a B road with the Sport Response Button engaged a light flex of the right ankle makes for a very very quick overtake unlike the 991.1 which required a lot of revs and dropping down a few gears to deliver a not quite as quick overtake manoeuvre. It's not as quick as a Turbo or Turbo S but go read the reviews and they all say one thing, it's the sweet spot in the range.

i have recently purchased a 991.2 GTS, its a well spec'd car with RWS, front lift, PCCB and LWBS. i have covered around 2k miles since picking it up at the end of May. I personally love the car, the brakes are just insane having never driven a car with ceramic brakes before, the stopping power on the road is incredible, not yet been on track with it. It is an all round fun car to drive, i cannot begin to imagine what the performance of a GT3 is like? as i currently find the gen 2 GTS very very good but practical at the same time. i use the car as my daily driver and can also cover the school run with ease. i cannot comment on the 991.1 GTS as i came straight from a 997 GTS previously. in comparing my two cars they are night and day in terms of evolution, but for me i would now never go back to a 997 regardless of model type. Personally if i were you i would extend your warranty and keep your 991.1 GTS they are great cars that are very competent and able and a good spot in the range between GT cars and normal 911's.

Thanks for all the comments from everyone.

i have driven the 991.2 GTS as thought great car, but I did miss the top end rush and sound track, although thought it was significantly faster in real world driving.

i think the Turbo will get my licence into serious trouble....

On balance whilst I’ve always changed my car every year or so, I’ve never quite clicked with a car like I have the 991 GTS, just love the look and the way it drives.

Going to service it, warranty it, maybe stick a private plate on it and keep putting the miles on it.

Maybe I could use the cash to buy a air cooled to sit next to it in the garage ??
