987 Gen 2 radial play in steering wheel?

i have a clear 2mm play at e rim on my Boxster. 2009 Gen 2 2.9 / 49k miles.
it is not the rubbery play you get from power steering, but a real mechanical play, i.e. Like a clamp needs tightening.
any advice please.
currently in France experiencing True Reasons to have a Boxster!
thanks in advance,
graham

Graham,

Do you mean vertical/lateral play or rotational play? The former could be the clamp malfunctioning; the latter could be play in the column itself and/or the rack/steering system.

Either way, best to get it checked by a professional.

Thanks both, it is at the wheel rim, as if you are steering.

Because I know it is there I am aware of it when driving, very slightly blurred at straight ahead.
had thought it a worn track rod end(s), MoT was 6 months ago.
tbh it has always been there when I bought it from PCT, just focused on it now.
are the racks suspect?

zig-zagged across Brittany today sweeping and tight roads, fabulous.
all at 80kph.....makes for a relaxed 5 hours in the seat.
37.2 mpg too. Got to be a benefit somewhere!

Always a worry when the specialist suppliers have steering racks listed..
must be a wear issue?
my '73 911 is still on its original rack, 45 years on.
what is going on?

Loose rack, maybe?
It certainly needs locating and addressing before any further "spirited" motoring - or any other type of motoring for that matter. [&:]

Back from a wonderful French Trip in the 987.2, what a car.
All cleaned etc today, so took a look at the upper UJ and spline that you can see from inside the car.

UJ bolt is very very tight, no play in the spline, so those are off the list, the easy ones to 'test'.

I will have to jack the front up and get to the rack, the UJ there and the inner/out track control arm joints. If those prove tight, then it must be the rack?
Can the play between the rack and the pinion be adjusted like the old car one could (ie my old 911?)

I find it hard to believe the rack could be slack after only 50K miles from new.
The power steering system is totally silent.

Pleased you made it back safely. [;)]
You'll need 2 assistants, one to hold the wheels steady, whilst the other wiggles the steering wheel from side to side. Inspecting from underneath, it should soon become obvious where the slack is. [:)]
Regards,

Clive
