Dear all,
I've been offered this today and wondered if anyone could confirm that it originates from a 3.4 litre 996.
I don't need it at the moment as the car is running well but its nice to have put aside just in case!!
Cheers

I think the engine number should be on there somewhere. That would be the best way to know for sure. Other than that, I can only think of measuring the bore and stroke. A 3.4 is 96mm bore and 78mm stroke, and the 3.6 is 96mm bore and 82.2mm stroke. Of course, it could be a Boxster engine, but they are a different bore size. 2.5 and 2.7 are 85.5mm bore, and the 3.2 is 93mm bore.

Cheers Richard,

I will ask him to see if there is an engine number to enable me to positively identify it.

Thanks

Gerry

Richard,

My mate has sent these photographs to help determine the crankcases original source.

It seems that it is definitely from a 996 although the engine serial number is difficult to read.

Regards

Gerry

It looks like it reads M96/04 661 113(?)72 to me, which would make it a 2001 3.4 engine. The /04 and 661 are clear enough, which are the engine type and series, indicating a 3.4 and 2001, so it should be fine.

Cheers Richard

He isn't giving it away at 600 quid but the cost of replacing all of these parts tops up at £7000 plus vat!!!

I think I'll have to take a chance and buy it from him.

Cheers

Gerry

No difference, as the crankshaft is the same for both. Is it complete with intermediate shaft and chain drive? I ask because the intermediate shaft for the M96/04 engine is no longer available, so if the shaft bearing goes and the shaft is damaged, you probably won't be able to get one to match. Depending on the engine type of your car, it will have either the roller chain drive, or a Hika chain. The two are incompatible, so you can't mix and match. If your friends block has all the parts you should be OK though.

Hi Richard,

Thanks for all of your advice.

Sadly It doesn't have the IMS included which is a shame if they are unavailable.

Gerry

Did you see the announcement of short block at 50% off prices from OPC?

Only takes one minute 32 seconds to build too [:D]
