Car Alarm & Vehicle Tracking

I am about to become the excited owner of a 2001 Boxster (986) 3.2S convertible. I have previous experience of driving a car with a Vodafone Automotive Tracking System fitted and found it offered me peace of mind. I would like to have the same peace of mind when driving the Boxster, especially as we plan to spend quite some time in mainland Europe. Clearly I can return to Vodafone and ask them to fit a new system for me on the Boxster but before doing so I wondered if any members of this esteemed club had prior experience of whether Porsche UK itself had the capacity to fit such a device? I know that when ordering a brand new Porsche from them it is possible to request the system be fitted at source but what about retrospectively?

There are good and far cheaper systems available. Some only a two wire connection. Have a look at Coban 303 and/or look at the Back2you website

Thanks for the speedy response to my enquiry. I will do as you suggest and take a look at the 2 websites you mention. Much appreciated

Not entirely relevant to your enquiry but an experience with Vodafone Telematics. My subscription is due for renewal. Vodafone invited me to renew via their new online process. Everything worked well until I checked my address details before committing my payment. The Post Code was incorrect in every detail. I telephoned instead and spoke to an agent who implied it is a new process and maybe has a few bugs in it. He said he would refer the problem and get it sorted. I elected not to renew until the issue is sorted. My next try some seven days later revealed nothing had changed. This time I sent a copy of incorrect page with my email explaining the problem. Still no reply from anyone at Vodaphone or an acknowledgement for that matter. I know they have a bad reputation for administration on their phone side and it seems that it is systemic. Having said that, the Telematics system has been prompt in alerting me when I have been stupid enough to forget the tag. However, recall response has been pretty bad. They are either overworked by potential thieves or lack sufficient human resource. Perhaps the latter is the case.

Thank you for taking the time to respond: I also have a mixed experience with Vodafone from a previous car ownership with their system fitted. Like you, I have found their response time in alerting me to be very good, be it because I had left the car at the airport for valet parking but taken the tag with me or simply leaving it home by mistake. However, I had recently renewed the subscription for a further year when the decision was taken to part exchange my car for something newer. Sadly, it was at this stage that I was advised the system was non transferable and non refundable. A salutary reminder to always read the small print
