982 Cayman S - First Service - Side Air Intake Shields Fitted

Today I've had the first service performed at just 1400 miles - my car has been on display at Silverstone and then at the dealer for almost 2 years, I purchased it last month with 40 miles on the clock.

The Porsche Centre (Chester) have carried out an enhancement which involves fitting grills in the two side air intakes and cleaning out the airbox etc. I've read on the forum comments about the amount of debris that can build up in the airbox so though members may be interested to see Porsche's solution. The gaps in the plastic grills look too large to stop stones etc. but should help keep leaves out (until they dry out, crumble and then get sucked in).

Apologies for the poor quality photo, I've only my phone to hand.

Looks a bit like what some do when they desnork.....grills or wire meshing seems to be the "filter" of choice when people go that route (apparently the induction noise is pleasing post mod)

Is this a standard retro fit item that Porsche will fit to all or is it something you have to ask for?

The grills were fitted as part of my first service, the service advisor described the work as an "Enhancement" so I presume Porsche has decided to fit to all 982 models. I didn't ask for or was aware of the grills until I arrived for the service. Part of the enhancement was to dismantle and clean the airbox.

Hum, didn't get these offered or fitted unknowingly when mine went in for it's first service a few months ago, will enquiry next time I'm there.

Edward,

The "before" grille photo looks nothing like my 982 CS air intakes. On my LH passenger side air intake there is absolutely nothing behind the outer grill. I can reach up with my hand almost to airbox. I'm not sure of the advantage of fitting a grille to the RH driver's side as it is primarily a cooling duct exit for the engine compartment fan. You can feel the air being expelled when the fan is running.

I'll query this Porsche intake grille modification with my OPC at the next service.

Thanks for the info.

Hi Brian

My car has a radiator at both sides, mine is a manual transmission - not sure if this would make any difference?

Mine is not an “s”, is pdk and has a radiator either side. I can see quite a few stones in the offside intake.

Will you be driving your car abroad~ Check with your dealer if you can swap position of headlight for driving abroad Cant believe it but apparently the are supplied with LEFT or RIGHT hand drive lights and CANT be changed without NEW light Units which is a two hour job!! Cant really believe this but CHECK Kind regards#

The menu on my car has a function for changing the lights when driving on the other side of the road.
Could be handy if you could post the details.

my wife just received the recall letter for our 718 Boxster delivered in June, when we got it I fitted the Zunsport grilles to the front air intakes and blank front panel but did not bother with the side intakes. Looking at those photos the Porsche grilles look very cheap and flimsy compared to Zunsport and require a fair amount of dismantling to fit. The Zunsport grilles fit from the outside and I think look much better so I think I will get those rather than go to Porsche.

Got my car booked in on Thursday at Porsche Swindon for fitting these, will be my first visit to this OPC instead of Porsche Bristol as I've moved closer. Will report back my experience of Swindon OPC as a comparison to Bristol and my opinion on the quality / atheistic of these retro fit grills, as i too think they look a bit cheap...

Hi Ray

Just back from a trip to the USA. Hope the attached image helps.

The left hand beam is noticeably flattened when swapping to the inverted setting.

Just cleaned my side vents and have treated them with gyeon q2 Trim which is a nano coating which lasts for about 24 months - figured it may be easier to do it before the vents are fitted....

Well worth cleaning up the side vents pre-fitment of the 'new' grills, wished I'd have done this first as OPC Swindon just slapped them on over the top of the dirty surfaces... see my 'daily driver' threat, I'm not overly impressed with either the grills or the OPC!
