Cayman 987.2 S 320ps power improvement

Hi there.

I have a 987.2 Cayman s and it is amazing. I have a few thousand pounds to spend on it and was wondering what exhaust or other upgrades that you would recommend?

I don't want to detract too much from the look of the car or make it too loud but I am looking to try and increase the power if possible.

Hi Alex,

Welcome to the forum.

To be honest, it's a relatively highly-tuned naturally aspirated engine for a start so you're not going to get a huge power improvement even if you spend a significant amount of money on mods - throttle body/plenum, exhaust manifolds and system and a DME retune. A DME retune alone probably will give you better driveability.

If you've not got the Porsche Sports Exhaust (PSE) option you might consider that - it's expensive and won't give you any more power than standard but will give you a better sound. Alternatively, Carnewal can modify your standard exhaust to do the same but at a much lower price.

I'd suggest that you just enjoy the car as it is and use the cash on petrol..!

Thanks so much for the reply. This seems to be the information I find. I guess I should save up for a 997 turbo. I think that's the next step up.

 
Motorhead is bang on the money with his comments. I went "Mod Light" on my gen 1 CS....air filter and Carnewal (probably worth circa 10hp combined), and a DMS remap (naturally aspirated engines won't see more than a 10% ish lift in output, unless you spend more ££ on throttle bodies, full system exhaust upgrades etc). These made a material difference (I found the DMS output graphs to be rather optimistic....am using Janspeed's dyno early Sept for an alternative view!). Or send it to Mr Ruf for a workover......

I replied to a similar thread on PH recently, as follows:

Personally id try and identify what youre actually looking for out of the car. Getting power from these motors is a very expensive game in my opinion and if i were to start with a base car id probably look to spend my money elsewhere such as the chassis, tyres or tuition. They will give you so much more than just an extra 30bhp. My R has the following power upgrades: EVOMS Intake IPD Plenum GT3 Throttle body Fabspeed race headers with 200 cell cats. Full Remus Ti exhaust MASE Engineering mapping. Makes anything from 345bhp to 375bhp depending on whos rollers its on, make of that what you will. That to me is a huge amount of outlay to gain very little over the standard car. Spend your money on some RSS Tarmac lower arms and some decent geometry setup aka Centre Gravity. You'll enjoy the most amazing steering and turn-in. Genuine improvements you can enjoy all the time and at all speeds.

Not trying to pee on your chips mate, just want you to have realistic ideas for gains vs monies spent. I think you would be seriously lucky to see 15bhp from just a map. Reliastically more like 5bhp as a headline figure is probably more like it. Yet you may pick up some mid range torque here and there and maybe some improved drivability. Alternatively, throw £300 quid at a track day and you'll see just how impressive your Cayman is in standard guise. You'll have more fun in a day than an extra 5bhp will provide all year and memories that last a lifetime. Start adding some tuition to that and you'll improve the one component you'll take into every car you'll ever own/drive again
