Great write up and pics, I have just done mine front and rear, powder coated red, all the slider plate bolts on mine were a bitch, ended up cutting a 4 mm Allen key down into 20 mm lengths and welding them into the heads of the bolts then got them out with a ratchet and 4mm socket.

Alternative is to buy a minty front set off me for £400 ready to fit 😉

 
Nice job, but a shame to go to all that length and not give them a fresh coat of paint?

 
Correct, paint doesn’t stop the car. However it’s nice to paint them without all the pistons and seals in as it makes a better job of it. :)

 
Lmao. Nobody mentioned painting insode the piston bores. I said painting the without the pistons and seals in you can make a proper job of it.

Which means you can mask them properly and bake them to get a perfect finish.

+1 Seems like a good opportunity to freshen up the look of the calipers while off. Makes perfect sense. Why wouldn't you..

Your write up on the calipers sir was truly beautiful, but nowhere near as beautiful as that monumental dummy spitting session!

You put something on a public forum you must be wise enough

to accept commendations as well as positive criticism. Nobody was slagging off your job, quite the opposite in fact. In fact it was remarked that you had gone to significant lengths to make a good job. Of which all that was suggested would be that now is a good time to paint them. If anyone else uses your splendid guide then they will also now know that this is a good time to refinish the exterior.

So before you be Mr “Keyboard Warrior” piping up calling names etc, perhaps you should lighten up and accept that this is a forum for PCGB members and not all of them will share the same opinion as you. As for sanctimonious “see you next Tuesday”, I’d happily say any comments on here to your face sir.

As for why the forum is is in decline, I can see exactly why when people get hurled childlike abuse from individuals such as yourself.

If I hadn’t met such a genuinely lovely welcoming bunch in my local PCGB region. People like you would make me seriously question my membership.

Im just glad you sir are not representitive of the wonderful club that is the PCGB.

A PCGB member who has 9 posts in 2 years of membership and does not show which car he owns or has owned in the past attacks a non member who happens to be not only a 968 owner, with 1253 posts on this forum, but also a time served motor mechanic who has helped many 968 (and occasionally 944 owners) owners including myself both here and on the porsche968uk forum with his knowledge and with practical help. If you were a 968 owner you would be on the porsche968uk forum and know how valued a member Waylander is, and you might also understand his reasons for being a guest here rather than a PCGB member. As a long standing PCGB member, I know and understand his reasons - as does the current 968RS, who tried his best to get Waylander to be his assistant RS.

Frayz, if you'd seen the "How To's" that Waylander has added to the 968uk forum, you would be seriously embarassed at the loss to PCGB forum 968 (and possibly 944) owners that you have caused.

I think the only person here who should be embraced of their actions is him. I didn’t come here to slag anyone off. quite the opposite. Yet I/we got a torrent of childish ranting for suggesting a different opinion?

I commeded him on his excellent guide yet offered a differnt opinion. Yet now apparently because I’m a newish member with only 9 posts then I should be ashamed? Seriously???

Not that it’s even relevant, did you not have 9 posts once upon a time?

As for my car details, it’s all there thanks very much. Not that it’s any business of anyone else’s or relevant to this matter. In addition, I’ve no doubt Mr Waylander is a very competent mechanic, however he is not the only mechanic here.

Had I have known there would be this much dummy spitting and toy throwing from such mature grown adults, I never would have bothered commenting in the first place.

Im truly staggered.

i think if you'd, actually, read Waylander's original post you'd have realised that not only did he prepare and freely distribute the 'excellent' pdf guide to brake refurb....

He did the work, just like he does many things for 'us', on a friend's car and for nothing more than a couple of mately pints.

So for anyone to comment that he could have done the job properly / better by painting the caliper too; blissfully ignores his charitable nature and to misquote J Clarkson in his 968 review "misses the point by a country mile" (Waylander, did in his reply to you state - that was a job that he'd left for the 'owner').

If you want to be a 'member' on here that is indeed your choice.

However, at least, one consenquence is that the excellent guide to brake refurb is not available to others. I'm sure they'll appreciate your input.

p.s. The word you're looking for is, spelt, embarrased. But maybe you do just need a cuddle.

 
Hope I'm not the subject of any come-back. For my part, anything I say, post or comment on in any of the many forums I subscribe to is never meant to offend or become personal. Experience and knowledge is not in the domain of a few but instead is shared or split across the many. Objective feedback, opinion or other viewpoints should be encouraged as we never stop learning - even if it's trying the same thing in a different way it can only be a positive take-away. This is why rennlist is so globally popular, huge and makes money - so many inputs and shared experiences offering help and advice and communal in-depth technical knowledge. Challenges and push-backs that are qualified are never meant to undermine the great work of others, merely to understand more why or how that great work was achieved. I personally never interpreted any of the above threads with other suggestions as being undermining, only as points of note. Most excellent that PCGB members do spend the time to write up such great tech guides etc and that conversations around them occur.

Unfortunately I don't have time I would like, to linger or contribute more on the forums I currently post in - busy young family takes priority. Any downtime is spent driving hard (all my cars) around the excellent country roads near me for a bit of a rush. As an engineer in an earlier life I used to do many an engine rebuild from 12 litre Rolls Royce engines to Austin Healey and Porsche. Owned a mix of cars from Ford Anglia (my first resto), '64 Mini Cooper, crap Datsuns and much later 308 GTB and a Jalpa before sticking with Porsche (and historic rallying along the way). Tinkered with all (hated the Jalpa in that sense). And I guess my point is that while I think I might know much (or how to go about things) I enjoy learning more and accept that others might have an alternative opinion to my own, and that's great - I learn and accept (even if it's old news).

Just saying. Happy (spirited driving) to all - put the two buckets and fleece sponges down and 3rd gear 5k revs the day away! :)

Hello, as an observer I get the impression that no-one's doubting the brilliant efforts and tech guide outputs Waylander has put together, we all appreciate these I'm certain. It seems that maybe the reference 'better job of it' was misinterpreted and taken as a corection but not meant in that way. Probably isn't the caliper refurb topic itself that's the concern here, more the way a comment was recieved and responded to in a way that made for uncomfortable reading. Can see these have now been removed. Apologies to all.

 
So let me get this straight.

Due to a passing comment and constructive, non-abusive feedback. I/we get a called a sanctimonious **** and i am not allowed to have an opinion or respond to that?

Nobody has any issue with anyone helping anyone out or writing up any guide here. This is all totally out of proportion and taken totally out of context and I have to say, I’m still staggered at the level of escalation this has caused in such a short time.

My issue is the aggressive and totally uncalled for response… nothing more.

Now to cry about it, removing his hard work, all responses and taking the time to write a new thread about how he will never post on here his how to guides again. Seriously?

That is totally unnecessary and any sane person reading any of the original comments would see so too.

I whole heartedly apologise for any offence caused, as that was never any intention.

It was merely offering differing of opinion and nothing more and said in a non-aggressive manner on an open forum.

Feel free to pick holes in my last project if you fancy it, its only had 600k views, and my 20k posts on there may have something to do with only my 10…11 on here.
