exhaust tail pipes question

Got a 987.2 2.9 recently and running great, but needed a few little things tidied up, including replacement of a manky tail pipe (the square one).
I had that done last week and took the opportunity to have the original square thing replaced with sports tailpipes (twin round tubes on this model) but not the full sports exhaust.
now much to my amazement, the engine note sounds noticeably different - bit more flat-six-ish if you know what I mean than it was before with the single square tailpipe. And I've driven it quite a bit with the roof down before and after tailpipes changed and I'm convinced there is a difference. pleasantly so, but not anywhere like a full PSE which isn't wanted anyway.
I wasn't expecting this to happen at all, and am wondering if I'm going a bit nuts as I can't see why this would be the case. Has anyone else noticed this or do I need to visit the doctor for a checkup?

I’m pretty sure that on the 2.9 the two banks of exhausts are merged before the tailpipe whereas they remain separate on the 3.4 (in the case of a Cayman anyway) so maybe that accounts for the change in sound?
 
Hi Richard - where did you get this done? I have been looking at it for my car but OPC quoting £500 seems a bit steep for tailpipes
 

OPC swindon - my car is under warranty so can't fit third-party bits. Cost would have been less than you were quoted, but mine was in for other things at the same time so incurred a keener price overall. Also if OPC you should get a 10% club discount on parts that they won't apply unless you tell them - which is significant. If you did just the tailpipes change at OPC then you probably wouldn't end up far off what you've been quoted I guess - indy would be a lot better.

if you're not under warranty then you can get parts a lot cheaper elsewhere and it's pretty much a home diy job if you're comfortable with that or an independent if not would be a lot cheaper. or original parts only from OPC and get your 10% discount and get fitted elsewhere would save a fair bit.

p.s. I needed a couple of new exhaust clamps as old ones corroded and had to be cut off - 40 quid for those on top - pretty likely that'll happen given I was changing the tailpipe since it was manky in the first place so can't really expect the clamps to be in any better condition.

 
I bought mine from e-bay for £199 for my 987.2 and the fit was easier than the normal OPC upgrade as I just had to unbolt the 'rectangular' original from the exhaust collector and replace, without fiddling on with the exhaust, took under 5 mins.

cool - that sounds like the way to go - mine old tailpipe was a bit manky and needed cutting off - but definite diy job if you can get the new pipes.
