Possible to change voltage regulator in situ?

Hello - need to replace the voltage regulator on my 91 S2 with air con. Removing the alternator is quite a job with removal of AFM and cooling hoses, etc. required to access the alternator mount and then moving the cooling fans to remove the alternator mounting bolt. Anyone replaced their regulator with the alternator installed? Looks tight to get the air shroud off but assuming it will clear can the regulator be changed without having to remove anything else?
Thanks

If your a contortionist

its the two cross head screws that hold it in, getting the correct angle and the strength to undo them

i have managed it on a 968 with no air con, and it was really hard, the next one took half the time as I took the alternator off

It is possible but it is very tricky. Best taking the alternator out or at least loosening it off the mount to allow easier access of shroud/regulator. The alternator can be removed without touching coolant hoses or cooling fans on a turbo with AC, sure the S2 is same. It's a bit tight but certainly do-able. 3 hour job start to finish. Trays off, belts off, AFM, and air intake boot off. Unbolt coolant hard pipe to allow some more mm's wiggle room. Disconnect bottom alternator nut and bolt, then undo long alternator bolt which comes fully back if you nudge the water hose downwards. Wriggle the alternator off the mounting lug and then orient it with the fan blades facing up and with a slight twist it will come up and out! You won't need to fully remove it however just move it a bit to get to the shroud. Good luck.

Thank you gentlemen. I feared I was "wishful thinking" that this could be done from the top without dealing with under tray, belts and dismantling the fragile bits of the fuel injection... Unfortunately I'm not a contortionist :) so I guess I'll be taking apart more than I hoped.

How did you get on? I managed to do mine some years ago and only had to remove the undertrays - yes it was a bit fiddly but doable.
