Error messages

Hi All

I am currently travelling in Europe with my 911 Carrera 4S (991.1) and no sooner had I arrived in France and changed the speedometer settings to KM up came a message "Service required”, even though the car is not due a service until November this year.

next day I emailed my local Porsche centre in Guildford, where the car is serviced, who suggested I visit my nearest Porsche service centre.

By the time they replied I was already in Switzerland, so I called into the Lausanne Porsche centre where a very helpful man took the car to the service area and brought it back "all cured” suggesting that Guildford had not reset the computer correctly. I thanked them for their help and proceeded to input my next sat nav destination, then went for a loo break, but on starting the car up, you guessed it, the same error message "Service required”

So back inside to request the very nice man to have another look at the problem.

Off again to the service area for another 15 minutes and the car returned "all cured”

So I headed off to meet up with my family in the south of France for a weeks holiday, only for the same error message to reappear two days later.

Car now booked into Porsche Guildford when I get back to the U.K. on 21 June - to be finally cured?

Has any fellow 991 owners had the same problem, and if so how was it cured?

regards

Hi Paul,

Hope you had a great trip and did not find this issue too troublesome.

I also encountered an issue with the 'Service Required' message appearing prematurely on my 991.1 C2S cabriolet towards the end of last year and took it down to my local OPC (which also happens to be Guildford).

The short answer is that they ultimately fixed it and the message has not re-appeared.

The long answer is that this was not without its drama in that initially they indicated that the message may actually be genuine and I should query it with the OPC I bought it from (Tonbridge, back in May 2017) as Guildford's records indicated that a full service might not have been done on the car prior to me taking ownership of it (and the service booklet could not confirm this one way or another as it was not specific about the type of service carried out). A phone call to Tonbridge confirmed this not to be the case and that the car had indeed had a full service in March 2017 (meaning that another one was not due until March 2019) and a number of other things were in fact attended to following the 118 point check.

This prompted me to query why Guildford could not see the same information and the reply came back that as Tonbridge and Guildford are not on the same dealer network, they do not see the same information(?) This completely baffled me and as a result Guildford initially suggested that I should take the car back to Tonbridge to get the service light reset. After me querying this further, they finally relented and accepted that the light was not genuine and I was able to take it into them to get it reset.

Cheers,
Keith

Hi Keith

Thanks for your quick reply, nice to know it is not just me.

my car was purchased in Porsche Exeter, and had a full service before I purchased it. Don’t fancy a 360 mile round trip just for a computer reset!

I will update when I have it looked at by Guildford Porsche.

Hi All

just an update. I booked the car into Guildford Porsche on Tuesday 3 July to have the problem rectified.

Car collected at 08.30 and dropped back to me at 17.00 on the same day with the problem "fixed”

As I had to go out to collect a package from the post office almost immediately I got into the car, started it up, only to have the same error message "Service Due”

I collected my package and dropped into Porsche Guildford at about 17.30 and spoke to the service manager who was surprised to see the car back so soon. He promised to call next morning after discussing the issue with his team.

Call next day from Tim, who is the mechanic who normally looks after me, and arranged to visit him at 10.00.

One issue that we did not notice before was the date on the cars computer was reading 17.02.2038 !!!

He took the car away but was unable to get the date to read the current date and suggested the problem was a glitch in the PCM which he had never come across before.

As the car is due it’s 20,000 mile service in a few months, we agreed to leave things as they are and see if it can be sorted with a software update or a new PCM at service time.

Further update to follow

regards
Paul
