Is going backwards actually going forwards

it's not a stupid riddle, it's decision time, do I chop in my rather lovely '07 black C4S in which I have just done a thoroughly enjoyable 400 miles to Belgium and back, for a '85 Carrera 3.2 with over 100k on the clock. It is a SSE and it's very nice and I would really like it but I'm ever so fond of my 997. What to do? I suppose I could flog the wife's Cayenne and have both, and she could cycle to work (she could do with losing a bit of weight) but I don't think I would be Mr. Popular! Decisions, decisions.
 
You could show your wife your post and then contemplate your decision from your hospital bed.[;)]
Alternatively, it all depends what you want to do with the car. Where as the 997 is a go anywhere everyday sort of car you may find the 3.2 isn't. If it's for high days and holidays/car shows etc then it could be perfect. My 928 is one of those.[:)]

 
Flogging the wife's Cayenne and suggesting she cycles to work to lose weight would mean you would have no need for a 2 seater car anymore (as a single person), so you might want to look into buying a motorbike once all the divorce costs have been paid! :ROFLMAO:

But on the much more important issue of the car choice, sounds like a choice between heart and mind. The heart is probably with 85 Carrera but then maintenance might be a bit of a headache. Probably worth it as it is more likely to appreciate than the 997. So go for that, and suggest an alternative exercise routine to the wife involving polishing motions. Wax on, wax off. Job done.

Its a tough one and more driven by the heart than mind and James and Alan say.

There is a lot of talk in the Porsche community about heritage, air cooled, outlaw, turning a 964 into a 3.2 look as so forth. I am not so sure how much is hype and looking at rapidly increasing values or maybe people being disenchanted with the modern 911....

Re a good 3.2, perfectly acceptable for day to day driving and long journeys. A friend of mine has a 3.2 and we go on Porsche trips (uk and abroad) and he loves it..... And pretty much keeps up with us on the slower roads without too many issues. Of course, it wont be as quick / comfy as a 991 but I think that has diluted what a "911" is all about in my opinion. Another friend of mine has swapped his 997 Turbo for an interesting 3.2.

I am in a similar quandary having an appreciating 997 Turbo and hankering for a 997 GT3 but then starting to look at 991 GTS's (kinda of the opposite direction to you). A 991 GTS is probably a better car in almost every area to that of a 997 GT3 or Turbo plus newer, more comfy and better specced but I think I will be losing the "911" feel.... The fun factor.

So, circling back to your question, a 3.2 is a great car, probably easy to maintain, will hold its value and is a true classic from day 1! But, so is your C4S....

Be Mr unpopular [:D] Unless you tow something, I would get shut of the Cayenne, keep the 997 and get the 3.2 and bye the missus a little runaround.
Oh, I'm practicing what I preach, as I did roughly his last year :)
Some things just have to be done. If you decide after a while you've done the wrong thing, just revert back. Its only a Cayenne after all!!

 
I've done it, bye bye C4S, hello '85 SSE. Gulp, deep breath. I spent 16k on my C4S this and a bit of last year so it's just perfection now, new steering rack, stainless sports exhaust, rads, air/con stuff, a grand getting the 6 cd unit working, lots of new oily bits, new tyres, on and on. But I'm hopelessly in love with the 3.2 Carrera look and style, and the turbo look is icing on the gateau. I didn't have to sell 'er indoors's Cayenne, I did try to sell one of the cats but he's an 'orrible old git so I'm not surprised no one wanted him, but the bank balance took a fair old hammering. I would post a piccy but as I am a Neanderthal and I don't have a 10 year old nearby to assist, you'll have to wait but it's red and it's got lovely voluptuously big arches. Got to go now, I'm going to have to lie down.
