Recall and vandalism

[FONT=calibri"]A couple of weeks ago I took my 991 to an OPC for a health check. All was fine but on collection I was told the car needed a replacement coolant pipe which would be done free of charge as it was, in effect, a recall. (Apparently, some 991s are affected, not all). The car went in on Tuesday with the work expected to take two days. I was loaned a Boxster S Cabriolet which was booked out to me for three days. It was pointed out, quite rightly, when signing the paperwork for the loan car that, in the event of damage, I would be responsible for the insurance excess of £500.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]On day two, I parked the Boxster in a County Council operated busy car park in broad daylight for a few hours in the afternoon. On the drive home, the wind noise inside the car seemed louder than normal and I made a mental note to check the roof was fully engaged. Arriving home, I discovered that some deranged moron had slashed the roof on the nearside rear corner which could only have happened in the car park as I had been nowhere else. Calls to the Police and the Council proved worthless and the OPC was, by this time, closed for the day. I was most upset.[FONT=verdana, geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]Early on day three, I rang the OPC and informed them of this mindless vandalism and made arrangements to collect my car later that day. On arrival, I was met by a customer services man who, following instructions from the service manager who remained out of sight throughout my visit, told me I would have to pay the £500 excess. I asked the customer services man to reconsider given that I, personally, did not cause the damage, that if it hadn’t been for a potentially defective part being found on my one year old car I wouldn’t even be there and that, in less than three years I have bought two brand new 991s from them totalling over £220K. He went off for a further discussion with both the service manager and general manager who both decided to uphold the original request for me to pay £500.[FONT=verdana,geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]I am, and always was, fully aware of my legal responsibilities and, given that I don’t want to fall out with the OPC, duly paid the £500. I know the damage was not their fault, neither was it mine but their lack of any goodwill and understanding has left me both shocked and disappointed. [FONT=verdana, geneva"]
[FONT=calibri"]I hope you don’t mind me sharing this sorry tale with you all and suggest that 991 owners might like to check if their coolant pipe needs replacing. If it does, I hope you have a better experience than me. [FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I feel your pain Jeff
thats very bad luck
I suppose at least it avoided vandalism on your own pride and joy
did the car park have cctv?
Worth chasing I guess - I don’t think the OPC had much option as fixing the roof will probably cost thousands
irritating though to say least

That's really bad luck Jeff - I would guess that the PC won't be seriously out of pocket since they'll probably claim from their insurer and your £500 may well cover their excess. Ironically, they may not even have to pay that since it was an act of vandalism..!

Mind you, I'm not really surprised by your PC's attitude. A recent bad experience with one gives me little confidence that that you get little more than stonewalling/corporate deniabilty from these large dealerships. It's all down to money of course, and goodwill often seems to take a back seat in their dealings with customers; "valued" or otherwise.

I assume that they won't be getting further business from you supposing you can find a convenient alternative?

Jeff

...service manager remaining out of sight...

That would really irritate me - customer service and management 101 don't hide from customers

Dylan1 - I did speak to the on-site car park office who checked their entry and exit CCTV but camera angles and poor quality pics showed nothing. Interestingly, I learned that there is no CCTV monitoring of any of the approx. 700 cars whilst they are actually parked in the car park.

Motorhead Jeff - I naively thought I was a 'valued' customer. Now I know I'm not!

Ralphmusic - it irritated the hell out of me too. Basic stuff, eh?

Hi Jeff,
Sorry to read about your experience.
Sounds like poor management to me.
Personally, I would have explained that there isn't any way to avoid paying the insurance excess but offered a free next service or something along those lines. Especially for somebody spending that sort of mone year on new cars.

Jeff,

I take out annual hire car excess insurance which has proved useful in the last 3 out of 5 visits to Spain. Reflecting on your experience, I wondered if this policy would cover me with an OPC loan car and it seems it would, the policy T&C include:

Courtesy Car

When You are provided with a Courtesy car, when Your own car is being serviced or repaired for Damage, We will pay You the costs of repairs or Excess relating to the Courtesy Car for which You are responsible, Up to £6500 for any one Incident and no more than £6500 in any one Period of Insurance. The maximum number of days for each loan period must not exceed 60 continuous days.

The annual policy costs £40 and the policy T&C are here

I realise the horse has bolted but maybe this is useful for the future

[FONT=calibri"]That is such a useful post. I have never heard of this type of policy before and will certainly be taking one out annually from now on given my bad experience this week. Having read through the policy details the cover for excesses appears very comprehensive and, frankly, if the cost is only £40 per annum it’s a no-brainer. Thank you so much. I owe you a large G&T![FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Hi Jeff

Really sorry to hear about your incident, and the OPC’s response.

I would suggest you contact Porsche GB customer service. In 2011 my new Audi Q5 delivery was delayed, the dealership was unable to help. Audi HQ helped by delivering a top range Q5 to my home, and then I took it to France for a two week holiday. Result!

Thanks for your worthy suggestion. Unfortunately, I have to make a choice: accept the status quo or escalate matters and, given that I live in no-mans' land as far as OPCs are concerned (I'm an hour's drive from the nearest), I can't afford to burn my bridges. I wish it were otherwise but, as one of the OPC's salesman succinctly said to me a short time ago when I asked how I could acquire a new, sought-after model such at as a GT3 or higher his response was that you need to have a track record of buying new cars from us and then, and only then, will your request for a GT3RS, for example, be 'considered' by the general manager/dealer principal. I think that says it all, don't you? It sucks!
