Check engine yellow light and running rough.

So went to start the car today and all was well. Within 10 mins the yellow check engine light appears and the motor now sounds like it's only running on 4 cylinders.
The car has been faultless up till now and only has 18,500 miles. Is there anything I can check before sending it to the garage for check over.
Any help be appreciated.

Cars are so heavily computerised nowadays its always worth turning car off removing key and leaving for 10 minutes and restarting, more often than not its just anelectrical gremlin and the fault has cleared.
 
If its a 2009 or early 2010 model, i would also say it could be the high pressure fuel pump. Mine did same. Then went fine for two months and then just went like a bag of bottles. Connected an OBD reader and it had recorded misfires. The fuel pressure sensor was reading something like 4000pa or something. Think it was around 1200 when running normal. My car went into limp mode. £700 from OPC to replace pump.
 
I had a complete HP pump fail on the turbo in the early days - it wouldn't run at all. The OP doesn't say which model of 997?
My money would be on coil packs - the description above sounds exactly like a problem I had on an earlier 997.1
 
defo sounds like coil packs to me, has exactly the symptoms described on my 56 997.1 back in the day!
 
So finally back from hols etc and managed to get the car into JGC Porsche in Brackley. Investigation into fault and mis fire on cyl 1. James thinks that at some point the car had been over filled with coolant and the pressure release tube dumps excess coolant onto coil pack 1 causing the issue. New coil pack and 1/2 hours labour and the car is back in business all ready for this stunning Summer we are enjoying.

Big thanks to James at JGC I feel he will be looking after my car from now on.
 
Hello, I have the same engine warning light that pops up from time to time and also an exclamation mark. Changed plugs and coil packs still the same. Fitted new silencers as the old ones had had it. Now nice stainless stee. Pig of a job as all bolts holding to frame rusted. Just a little insight of work but I still have the same engine warning lights come up before I did any of the work. So! Car starts ok runs well then as if choke drops off, starts to run rough and engine warning lights come on. really lump. Stop car, plug in hand held diagnostics kit, shows misfire on cylinders 1,2,3. Clear codes. Start car, runs beautiful. Then warms up a bit more and warning lights back on. Once up to temp, seems ok and then lights back on. Really frustrating. Any thoughts please. It’s a 911 997 2004 model.
I‘ve read through other blogs but at a loss what to do next.

All misfires on one bank Adrian so you’d have to suspect something like a faulty lambda sensor which your diagnostic kit should pick up. Cam controller problem maybe?

You may need something more Porsche specific to get to the source of the problem.

That's very helpful so thank you. Being a newbie with a Porsche it's a little daunting so wanted to reach out and ask the experts :)

I'll take a look around for a local Porsche specialist here in West Sussex. I'll let you know how I get on and with having more intel on a likely problem, 'Lambda' or moreover 'Cam controller' I may pick up the detail on my kit.

Hi Adrian,

The iCarsoft analyser is a decent bit of kit which I'd have thought would pick up lambda sensor error codes, but it may not pick up more complex issues associated with the multitude of electronic modules found in the modern cars. For that you'll have to go to your local Porsche Centre or an Independent who has a PIWIS or equivalent (Parr or Precision Porsche perhaps?).

Incidentally, you may get a better forum response if you set up a new post.

Thanks again Jeff and I'll check the car over tonight when home from work. I need to read the instruction manual for the diagnostics kit and look out for other codes.
Knowing a great deal more from you has helped and I agree, a new post would be the right thing to do.
I joined up with Pelican Parts website over Christmas and just popped in there a moment ago, this came up. Goes along with what you've been saying and this is how the cars been. [FONT=verdana,geneva"]Variocam Solenoids: [FONT=verdana,geneva"]It's not uncommon for the variocam solenoids to fail on one side, which will result in a uneven or lopey idle. Moisture can get into the mechanism causing it to corrode and eventually fail. The DME computer should easily be able to detect this failure and trigger a check engine light (CEL).

Yes, definitely something to check-out Adrian. PIWIS diagnostics should throw up an error but I'm not sure about your iCarsoft kit - worth a punt though.

If it turns out to be the solenoid it shouldn't be too difficult or expensive to rectify (although we're talking Porsche parts and labour here!). Don't forget that as a Club member you can get a 10% parts discount if you purchase from a Porsche Centre.
