Steering column spacer/clamp question

Guys

Still trying to sort out the in/out movement of the steering column in my early 944.
Have checked that the steering wheel and underdash column bolts are tight, and the UJs under the bonnet aren't loose, it's just that the column moves fore and aft complete with column switches unless the steering lock is on.-I can't figure out why!

Looking at the PET, the steering column is listed as having a "Support ring" and a "clamping sleeve" at the top behind the wheel. Question-what are these like? I know about the plastic spacer behind the wheel (Which is there) but which of the two listed above is this, and what does the other one look like?

Anyone ever stripped a column down before?

Thanks guys.

I had an issue like this ages ago although mine is an oval dash. I had a new steering shaft fitted by a local indy which did not cure the problem. Turned out to be a circlip that secured the column in behind the steering wheel that wasn't secured.

Thanks for that but it doesn't help. The oval dash cars do indeed have a circlip but the early cars use the 924 column that has no clip. I'm sure there must be something missing somewhere as I cannot think of another reason for this to be happening.

Sorted this. It turned out that the allen headed bolt which holds the steering lock in place was missing. I hadn't realised that one of it's functions was to stop the column moving. Found the bolt in amongst some other stuff that was in the car when I bought it. Replaced and tightened-all column movement stopped. [:D]
