Oil Pressure - too high?

So last week at Bedford, my S2 blew an oil filter seal - twice!

The suggested problem is the OPRV, which has been replaced - at a huge cost [:(] I've also had a gauge fitted to measure oil pressure - it has a peak warning light and peak recall feature.

On a short test drive, with oil still cold, it was hitting over 7 bar! No idea if that happens normally as the gauge only goes to 5.

Anyway, I'm off to Cadwell tomorrow. I plan to swap the 10w60 for 10w40 tonight & see what difference that makes.
 
Well, yes, that will definitely make a difference? Why are you on 10w-60 anyway? Should be thinner than that at the top end.
 
233k mile engine, track car...

THis oil worked best in my turbo.

Test results with 10w40 - idle 2.5, max 6 bar ( hot oil, max revs, wot)
 
Out of interest do you remember what oil pressure you were getting on the the std car gauge going down the main straight at Bedford?
 
I'd have to break the habits of a lifetime to post over there...I don't bother as it's 95% the same people

I blame the the passenger. ..

Anyway the car was fine at cadwell today - shame the new gauge packed up up around lunchtime - seems like sender problems.

10w40 worked, and didn't use much either. I stuck in that bargain petronas oil that eurocarparts were selling last year.

Glad to hear you got it sorted and had a stress free day at Cadwell.

When red hot I was getting just under 3 bar at idle in the pits and pegged at 5 bar down the main straight, but it could easily have been more than 5 because the gauge goes no higher.

Yes the factory gauges aren't a great deal of use sometimes.

This morning the 10w40 was over 7 bar at 2-3k revs when stone cold. It settled to 6 bar after a few miles. When hot it didn't exceed 6 bar on track - maybe first lap out was 6.5.

ChrisG had his turbo out today - good to see that back on track. There was also a black turbo there - retired mid morning with suspected hgf..

How do you know it was hitting Seven when the gauge only goes up to Five?[8|]

I am getting close...I think, 1st July sees me take on a garage which Lin has sorted for me (I didn't know) got my eye on a couple of 924's- 1988's

Quite fancy one of those, good fun I reckon

The track day funds are growing, sold 2 sets of wheels few other bits to go, self funding Porsche track car [:D]

Andy, there's no doubt that track cars cost a pile of money, things wear much faster, and there's always the temptation of the next shiny (or lighter) bit...

No need to be fixed on a Porsche (although I suspect that Boxsters are coming into budget track car territory now). As always the cheapest route is to buy one that's already been built to the sort of spec you want.

Cheapest track cars are always going to be small FWD hatches, closely followed by the MX-5. At Cadwell yesterday, one of my friends was there in his Mk 1 MX-5. He's previously had a number of turbo jap nutter cars, and bought this last year. He may only have 100hp or so, but he wasn't much slower than me round most of the circuit as power doesn't help you through the twisty bits...

He also did almost 300 miles on the track yesterday - so as far as £/mile I think he wins hands down.

The later MX-5's were out as well - Roddison motorsport were there with their Mk3? race car (no idea really on the different Mk's) which was definitely quicker than me. Of course that may have more to do with driver skill and commitment - still haven't really got Charlies 1 / 2 nailed in the 944, and a narrow track and wet grass make it quite intimidating.

The other RWD choice is the E36 - a 328 or 325 goes well, sounds great and is similar in pace to an S2. They do seem to need quite a bit of fettling though.
 
Don't worry I have no doubting the costs [:D]

E36 was they way I was going to go originally, but I fancy a 924, I want to keep with the Porsche "thing" and reckon a 1988 car will do me well as a starting point, I loved the Bedford track day and hopefully we can do more of those.

I did think about the M3 but it is too nice a car to turn into a track car
