My first 944 turbo

avenger

New member
hi
new to the porsche scene after owning loads of modified classic through the years, bought my 944 turbo this Sunday just gone, its ment to be standard but shows nearly 2 bar boost when at full throttle, surely this is incorrect??, also my cooling fans siezed up yesterday after a little run out!!

showing 88k with good history drives really well has cup 1 alloys fitted and came with the original teledials too!

does anyone on here know my car? D944 SRC Guards red

Hi and welcome to the world of 944 boooost. Was the boost measure off of the dash gauge or an after market one ? The dash version measures boost plus atmosphere, so will show well over actual boost which iirc is around 0.8 bar standard. If so then no worries at all - if its an aftermarket example then thats another matter !

Sounds like a nice car - we will need pics so you can show it off ! [:)]

ETA when you say your cooling fans seized up what actually happened ?

hi it is the dash gauge, so you think its pretty standard boost pressure?

cooling fans, i heard them run on Sunday but last night i had it idling in the garage while i diagnosed a whine, and thought after a while that i hadnt heard the fan cut in, checked the gauge and it was in the red!

after allowing it to cool i tried to turn the fans by hand and they are stuck, checked the fuse and it would appear the last owner had merely fitted a bigger fuse as it had melted!!

quick check on ebay and 2 used fans are on there way!

once i work out how you upload pics all add a few, quite keen to show it off as i just love it!!

Firstly, welcome on board and welcome to the booooost club !

Regarding the boost showing, I assume you're refering to the standard factory boost gauge integrated into the rev counter ?

If so, 2bar is correct as it also includes 1bar of atmospheric pressure.

With regard to the cooling fans, the most likely culprit is the rad switch situated on the LHS (looking forward ) of the radiator. To check this, pull the plug off the switch and using a jumper lead connect two of the connections - one is an earth, then a low speed then a high speed switch.

Has you model got AC ? The later versions of the Turbos with AC has the fans wired so that when you put the AC on the fans kick in as well - if you have AC try switching this on in the cab and then listen/ look for the fans going around.

If doing this still gets no joy, look at fuses and the very complex large relay in the fuse box.

Good luck !

thanks for the welcome, it does suprise me that the boost pressure is standard, feels way quicker than 220bhp (just sold a 3.2 Quattro Audi tt and owned a 350+bhp sapphire cosworth)

as for the cooling fans, i have checked all the circuits and relays, all are ok its just the fans seem to be siezed solid, so i will replace these at the weekend

mine does have a/c, unfortunatly it has no gas in the system so theres another job!!

just a note of caution, removing and refitting the rad fans and cowling on a Turbo = a right PITA

I know this as I had my out in May - you'll need to remove all 3 undertrays (hopefully the batwing isn't welded tight to the front wings....) and you'll need a 27 & 32mm spanners to remove the factory oil cooler to allow clearance for the fans to drop.

Top trick = get the front end of the car high in the air or you won't have enough 'swing' to get the fans and cowling down !

sounds like fun!! might bring it into work and onto a ramp then, having a quick look i thought they might come out the top!

thanks for the heads up

If you think about it, +2BAR of boost isnt going to be likley without a massive amount of work. The OEM gauge is showing you about one BAR of boost, on top of the one BAR of atmospheric pressure from nature...

I know the car, Guards Red, the Cup 1's were bought from me, one of the Teledials is buckled mind you but can be fixed/repalced, nice car there, not sure of the spec but my then standard 220 would show 2 bar on the dash guage.
I am totally convinced that the 220 wastgate is a better unit than the standard 250 one as mine was original and kept boost unlike some of the later 250 turbos i have owned, was this Porsche clipping the cars wings again so as not to steal the flagships mantle ?
Feels Quick ?
Get some tuning goodies on it....................Booooooooooooooooossst [:D]

Edited to say welcome to the fold [:)]

Welcome welcome welcome to the exclusive boost club. That's two new members in as many days that I know of. I won't say who the other is yet until he announces it. Get some mods on the go and you will knocking on the 300 HP door with very little effort. In the meantime keep on enjoying it [:)]

my turbo is back on track, fitted the cooling fans bought off ebay, retensioned the timing and balance belts as they were way too tight and whining alot, that took about 4 hrs (removed the fans from the top) then moved onto cleaning!!! couldnt resist a qick blast down the road though!!!
