996tt brake upgrade

or anyone considering uprating their brakes....

I've always liked the brakes on my tt, very progressive, no fade and effective. The car is 2001 with lowish mileage and has been 100% trouble free, pretty much as new. But the car has had a Manthey chip (plus Europipe stage2)and with 570+ lb/ft it's ferociously quick. So i recently decided to upgrade the brakes.

I went for gt3 6pot calipers (and associated discs, pads), kept the hoses but put in SRF fluid. I went to ProMax (near MK)who i've used for some years and they are always excellent, honest and not expensive.

The result has been really impressive... still very progressive, but unbelievably effective (if carrying a passenger, strongly suggest they adopt the brace position...!) and without losing any of the feel, giving total confidence.

Very interesting but I am surprised you would need better brakes for road use. Even on trackdays the standard brakes are excellent and with a set of Pagid Blue pads or similar are, in my opinion, well up to the job. I guess you do track days?

I am considering some slight mods to improve the on track experience but looking more at springs, shocks and bushes as compared to my race car the turbo feels rather numb and uncommunicative - needs the feel sharpening up somewhat.

My brakes went West when I was at Goodwood on the weekend. They started to fade after only 3 or 4 laps and on the cool down lap the heat soak meant the pedal went to the floor when pulling in!! The front discs are now cracked quite badly and knew that this would finish them off.

But I'm undecided as to what to do. The expensive route is change the calipers and fit bigger discs as per the OP and then you get a post like the one above which says that proper fluid and a pad compound change is all that's needed.

So, does anyone else want to offer more opinions to a would be occasional trackdayer (3 or 4 a year)?

I have changed my front brakes to gt3 6 pots, they are fantastic on road and track. I had problems with the standard brakes on track, would only last a few laps before brake fade. Also had some scary moments on road use with the standards.

I also do occasional track days and agree with you on the suspension. Having had the KWv3 kit fitted a year or so ago, it is much better on road and track IMHO.

Never again for the Pagid Blues though! I'm back to standard pads (and more new discs [:(]) which seem to work well with SRF but need a good shove compared with my other car which has Pagid yellows so that's what I'll change to ready for next year.

Oh well all a bit irrelevant for me as just got Nissan GTR and Porker gone to some lucky blighter.....

I did like the Pagid Blues on my old 993 Carrera2 even if they did munch through the discs pretty quick!

I had an X50 Turbo and the standard brakes were in my view very marginal, even for fast road use.

It's a heavy fast car.

For track work as standard it would be pretty useless IMHO.
