Morning 2.7 devotees! I'm looking for some tips & advice please around improving reliability of the 2.7 engine.
My 1976 MY (911 2.7 with 915 box) is due to go into my specialist's garage in January to have the engine out for some 'routine' maintenance & also for some "reliability upgrades".
The engine is running well (about 65k miles on it), but does have some minor oil leaks, so I expect all points of actual (& potential) leakage will be dealt with...gaskets/seals/pipes etc
In addition to this I wish to upgrade a couple of things to make the engine more reliable. First & foremost is to upgrade to the 'oil-fed' tensioners that were fitted to the later Carrera 3.2. I understand from many sources, notably the 2.7 buyers guide here, that this is 'must-do' upgrade for the engine.
I also read that another point of failure can be the head studs, which can be alleviated by the Dilavar options on the market??
I would appreciate any guidance regarding these issues/upgrades. I see Design 911 have oil fed upgrade kits. But are others available &, if so, any recommendations for which one to go for. Also, would it be wise to change the Cambelt chains as well?
Regarding the studs. Again, any recommendations? Note that I only use the car on the road & driving style is 'spirited' at best. I have no plans to race it.
Lastly, anything else anyone can recommend that I should consider to do to improve reliability whilst the engine is out?
Note, I will also be changing the worn starter motor & will also upgrade the alternator, as I intend to fit electronic air-con (Classic retro?) at some point.
I also plan to upgrade the 5 blade fan to an 11 blade fan, replace the long intake & return pipes & also adding an oil cooler to the system as I intend to drive in Europe in the summer.
I also plan to change the exhaust, ditching the heat exchangers & fitting new manifolds with a 2 into 1 (Dansk?) SS silencer. I assume it's preferable to do this whilst the engine is out?
Appreciate this is quite a long thread! But any advice/recommendations/do's/don'ts etc will be gratefully received!
