Welcome to the Cayman Register

The Cayman Register covers all versions of the Cayman from the 987 through to the latest generation 718.

Unusually for Porsche the Cayman S 987 started with a 3.4-litre flat 6 of 295 hp and was launched in September/October 2005, a year before the Cayman which followed and was powered by a 2.7-litre of the same configuration. This version is often referred to as The Gen1 and shared the same chassis design as the current Boxster

The Design Edition came in 2008 and had several options fitted as standard with the addition of a briefcase with a special edition watch amongst other items. Around the same time a Cayman S Sport was also available. Both of these special editions received a small power increase.

In 2009 the Gen2 Cayman and Cayman S were introduced with a 2.9-litre and a 3.4-litre of which the 3.4 had improvements of direct fuel injection and the intermediate shaft had been removed from the design. The two also received a power increase of 20 & 25 hp and redesigned lights amongst a few other visual changes.

The 987 Cayman R arrived in 2011 as a lower, lighter, track orientated version producing 330 hp and shedding 55 kg from the standard Cayman.

From late 2012 the type 981 Cayman was introduced, with 275 hp 2.7-litre and 325 hp 3.4-litre S 6-cylinder, direct fuel injection engines, a new, wider body shape and increased levels of refinement. A  GTS model was introduced in 2014 powered by a 340 hp 3.6-litre flat-6 engine with PASM as standard and sports suspension as a no-cost option.

In 2015 Porsche released the Cayman GT4 to immediate critical acclaim. The track derived, driver focussed variant was the first Cayman to roll out of the Weissach Development Centre and wear the fabled ‘GT’ badge.

The 718 Cayman was announced in December 2016 and heralded a change to four-cylinder turbocharged engines, with the 718 Cayman producing 300 hp and 350 hp for the Cayman S. A GTS model was introduced in 2017 producing an extra 15 hp courtesy of a new intake system and an optimised turbocharger.
