In younger years I was a 911 enthusiast with my four-wheel drive experience limited to a Jeep Grand Cherokee. A subsequent test drive in an early (2003) second-hand Cayenne Tip S changed everything. I described it as a 911 on stilts, bought it immediately and kept it for 10 years. Finally the ‘death rattle’ experienced by some early 4.2 engines put an end to our partnership. The necessary decision to scrap the car took less than 500 miles (and no small amount if expense) from my wife first noticing a barely audible tapping from under the bonnet. Misfires, oiled plugs and all that goes with cylinder bore wear followed.
