Welcome to the Early 911 Register
The Early 911 Register covers all 2.0, 2.2 and 2.4 litre models made between 1964 and 1973.
The 911 standard model was first available to purchase in September 1964 and identified simply as the 911. In September 1966 it also became known as the 911 N on the introduction of the 911 S and in September 1967 changed its name to the 911 L on the introduction of the 911 T. The 911 L was phased out in August of 1968 and replaced by the 911 E from September 1968. Production of the 911 E continued until August 1973.
The 911 sports model was first available to purchase in September 1966 and was identified as the 911 S. Production of the 911 S continued until August 1973. An entry level version of the 911 was built to replace the 912 from September 1967 and was known as the 911 T. Production of the 911 T continued until August 1973.
Engine sizes for all models started as 1991 cc in September 1964, increasing to 2195 cc from September 1969 and finally to 2341 cc from September 1971 until end of production in August 1973.
During the period the wheelbase was increased from the initial 2211mm to 2268mm to correct the cars nervous handling on the limit. The 2211mm cars are known as the short wheelbase cars and the 2268mm cars are known as the long wheelbase cars. The change occurred in September 1968.
The cars were available as a Coupe throughout the period and also as a Targa from September 1966. Coupes were available in right hand drive from the start but the Targa was only available in right hand drive from September 1972 to August 1973.
Gearbox options were four or five speed manual throughout the period or four speed Sportomatic from September 1967.
