Last month I explained that a suspension refurbishment was underway on my 1976 Sporto. The front was straightforward, but the rear was more problematic.
The rear torsion bars are held in place by spring plates bolted to the chassis. These are removed by unbolting and removing the spring plate and removing the small round plate in the bodywork just ahead of the rear wheel. Once the spring plate has been removed the torsion bar is then withdrawn through the hole where the small round plate has been removed in the bodywork. Easy! Yes, but only if the torsion bar hasn’t seized in the spring plate!
