R2 Summer Solstice 2022

We are proud to present the most ambitious R2 Summer Solstice ever planned.

This year, we have an extra special event lined up for you. With armed forces day just around the corner, we are teaming up with the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland (3 SCOTS) for an exciting charity event in support of the Army Benevolent Fund - the ABF.

There will be a suggested donation of £20 per car for this event, although there is no minimum or maximum donation. All donations will recieve a unique R2 Summer Solstice 2022 window sticker. There will be a charity bake sale on the night. All funds raised will go directly to the ABF.

We will gather in Ballater, where we can socialise and at 5:00pm, we will depart for an epic driving route that will take us up and over the Lecht, through Tomintoul and Granton on Spey, and arriving at the 3 SCOTS community centre in Inverness at approx. 7:00pm.

Once at the community centre, we will park up for a private car show, where the families of the currently deployed personnel will be invited to come along to meet up with us, and have a good look around the array of Porsche's on display.

At around 8:00pm we will depart for our final destination - the finest example of 18th century military engineering and the largest artillery fortress in the British Isles - Fort George, the home of the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Regiment of Scotland.

This incredible fortification was built to exert the power of the Crown across the North of Scotland after the 1746 Battle of Culloden. It took 22 years to build at a cost of around £1B in today's money. It was designed to garrison an 80-Gun artillery detachment and 1600 infantrymen and their officers. It's amazing central magazine store could house over 2,600 barrels of gunpowder.

The undisputed masterpeiece of this fortification are the Fortress Ramparts - in places well over 20ft thick- with a total perimeter of 1km, enclosing an area the size of 5 football pitches.

It is from these ramparts that we will be basking in the last rays of sunlight on the longest Saturday of the year, with commanding views of the Moray Firth down to Inverness and beyond. Members will have full access to walk the entire perimeter of the ramparts on the night, and take in the views.

To close off the evening, there will also be an opportunity to line the cars up at the Fort, for an impressive group photograph at sunset.

We would like to invite all R2 photographers to bring their kit along.

We are very grateful to Captain Richard Grisdale, the staff and families from 3 SCOTS for supporting us in this event. We hope that many members can make it along and donate generously to support both serving and ex-service men and women in need.
