Portmeirion 2015

Phil Graham reports:

The recent visit to Portmeirion proved as popular as ever, with 60 for lunch and 53 staying over on the Sunday night.

Our meeting point at Rhug was on a chilly but bright Sunday morning, with everyone having enjoyed a really good drive on excellent, almost empty roads. Coffee and a catch up followed prior to heading over the now white mountains as the weather closed in. Fortunately our route took us just below the snow line on a clear but wet run to Portmeirion.

It is a very special place with the magical atmosphere of the Italian Village, the spectacular scenery, meeting old friends and making new acquaintances. Relaxing over lunch and dinner, enjoying fine food with a glass or two of your favourite tipple is why we keep coming back.

Sunday lunch drifted into late afternoon with Irene Wheeler winning a bottle of Prosecco donated by the hotel. It was a pleasure to have Irene, Bob and the Prosecco on our table in the evening as they insisted on sharing it. Nette Graham won the Member of the Year Award for the first year - a fine trophy designed and crafted by Barry Dolton, in oak supporting a Porsche conrod and piston which were surplus to Ninemeister’s requirements. A bottle of wine was offered to the person who knew how may strings there were on the Welsh Harp - 46 was the closest, but one string short at 47.

Dinner came around quickly. What a marvellous night of sharing - Prosecco, Merlot and a couple of glasses of Royal Tokai pudding wine courtesy of Adrian - cheers!

Sunday was bright and sunny and we had a leisurely breakfast and said our goodbyes before a fast topless run to GYG Karting, where a group of eight of us took to the circuit in karts. It was only a 10 minute session and definitely not a race. I could have sworn Eddie told us there was to be no contact. No names mentioned, but he did finish first! It was all good fun and a nice end to our first outing of the year. Here’s to 2016!
