Our Weekend of the Year 2018 took us to Northern Ireland

WOTY to Northern Ireland 13th - 17th September 2018

We always try to plan our Weekend of the Year towards the end of the event season, something to look forward to as the season winds down. This year Dave & Amy Carnaffin very kindly took over the reins and did all the organising for our trip to Northern Ireland. Sadly a couple of last minute cancellations inflated some of the hotel prices but that definitely didn’t dampen spirits. Seventeen members enjoyed a fantastic time in the emerald Isle.
We set off for Cairnryan Port from Sally’s at Warwick Bridge, clutching our packed lunches kindly provided by Sally (who joined us on the trip with husband Mark). Our first stop was the Titanic Hotel, the former Harland and Wolff headquarters. Everywhere in the hotel you find yourself surrounded by the history & culture of Belfast’s shipbuilding past. Our favourite was the bar, the old drawing offices where ships like Titanic were designed.  With our Porsches tucked up at Porsche Centre Belfast for a few days we explored Belfast on the open top bus and visited the Titanic Museum. On Saturday we drove some very scenic roads alongside Strangford Lough to Portaferry, then via the Stragford Ferry to the Mourne Mountains. We stopped for a quick lunch in Armagh, where several members stayed longer to enjoy what the town had to offer. The rest of us chose a longer route to our hotel in Enniskillen. The following day we managed to enjoy some of the spectacular roads of the Wild Atlantic Way in the Republic, before our last stop at The Causeway Hotel, giving us a chance to visit the Giants Causeway before dinner, and our traditional WOTY Quiz, this year devised by Phillip and Jacqui Sayer. The next morning we visited the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge, before driving along the beautiful Causeway Coast to the ferry for home. Thanks to Dave & Amy for planning a great weekend; wonderful hotels, fabulous restaurants and impressive driving roads (Sorry R27, your secret is out!) but as usual at any R3 outing, it was the people who made the weekend special.
