The titanic battle between Ford and Ferrari for supremacy of the 24hr Le Mans race in 1968 is the stuff of racing folklore. The Ford GT40 was created because of one man’s grudge; Henry Ford II wanted a Ford motor car to not only compete in, but also win, the 24 Hours Le Mans race.
He reacted with enormous interest when he learned that Enzo Ferrari was interested in selling Ferrari, spending millions of dollars on legal expenses and an exhaustive audit of Ferrari’s assets. However, as negotiations entered their final stages, Enzo Ferrari pulled out leaving Henry Ford II with little or nothing to show for the millions spent to that point. Henry Ford II was understandably enraged, leading him to direct his motor racing division to come up with a car that could beat Ferrari in an endurance race – the 1968 24 hour Le Mans race. The result was the Ford GT40 and the rest, as they say, is history.
The battle between Ford and Ferrari is the subject of a new film: 'Ford versus Ferrari', starring Matt Damon and Christian Bale, due to be released later this year.
