Crafting a custom Porsche Cayman

Chris Wildsmith explains why he upgraded a Cayman for trackdays rather than taking the more straightforward GT option

I took the plunge into Porsche ownership in 2015. Driving a pal’s 911 4S back from the Festival of Speed was the tipping point. Every driving sensation felt as if it had been turned up three levels.

My 991 911 4S test drive was with a Porsche instructor whose first words were: “I can show you how the car drives and how to get the most from it but don’t ask me how to connect your phone.” Some 90 minutes later, I wanted the car and was also amazed at how a professional driver could make car control look so effortless. I bought the 991 determined to hone my driving skills.

After 18 months of coaching and learning, mainly with Nick Arnold, an ARDS-qualified instructor, plus some swearing, I was starting to feel that though a great car, a 4S was really a comfortable sofa.

I wanted more. I’d experienced both a GT3 and GT3 RS on track but three things put me off. First, the modern car has too much wizardry and I wanted to know when it was me doing it right, not the car. Second, I didn’t get a thrill from pulling a PDK lever and planting my right foot
