The Restoracing series is underway and living up to the hype.
Porsche Classic’s Restoracing Competition got off to a superb start at Brands Hatch last Saturday, with a field of 16 986 Boxsters going toe-to-toe around the historic Grand Prix circuit.
Each car was fielded by a different Porsche Centre, having been restored and rebuilt to FIA regs and painted in an iconic livery from Porsche’s racing past. The cars were all driven by employees of their respective centres too, many of whom had no previous racing experience.
Josh Morris qualified his Wally’s Jeans-themed Boxster from Porsche Centre Bolton on pole, just a tenth of a second clear of Ben McLoughlin representing Bournemouth.
In race one, McLoughlin, a relative veteran of the amateur racing scene, managed to take an early lead in Class 3 and defend it doggedly after a safety car bunched up the field. He would eventually take the first win of the series ahead of a tightly packed group, from which would emerge Will Heslop in second and a resurgent Josh Morris in third.
In the second round, McLoughlin led Morris and Heslop early on, power-steering failure putting Heslop out just as another safety car appeared. Once they were racing again, McLoughlin stayed clear to take his second win, Morris second and Jamie Woods in Guilford’s head-turning hippy car a deserved third.
“Credit to the guys at Porsche Centre Bournemouth for building such a good car,” said McLoughlin, “but the other cars must be good as well as I had people right with me. It was a great day, and my first wins in 15-years!”
