Speed Championship Swelters at Harewood

Andy Fagan reports from the eighth round of the Porsche Club Speed Championship.

Andy Fagan reports from the eighth round of the Porsche Club Speed Championship.

Twelve competitors in four classes from the Petro-Canada lubricants Porsche Club Speed Championship with Pirelli assembled at Harewood Hillclimb on 8 July. Like our previous round at Prescott, we were joined once again by the Porsche Club National Hillclimb Championship competitors who were competing over two days. The weather was sweltering, especially for the competitors in their race suits and helmets. The track had just been completely resurfaced and was looking good for our first competitive event at this venue.

Four competitors lined up in Class P1 including a rare appearance by Karl Lupton in his supercharged Porsche 944 S2. Darren Slater set a personal best of 64.49 but it wasn’t enough to make the podium being just one-tenth of a second shy. Third place went to the ever-improving Peter Taylor in a Porsche 718S after setting a time of 64.39. Karl Lupton took the second spot with a time of 64.25 but in the top spot and taking maximum points was David Dyson once again hurling the big Porsche 991 Turbo S up the hill with a best time of 63.18.

Class P2 was competitive from the start with Andy Fagan (Boxster 3.2 S) finishing in third place with a time of 65.60. In second place with a time of 65.45 seconds was Graham Rose in a 968-engined 924 S. The eventual winner was Justin Mather who overcame a few teething problems with his 924’s new supercharger system and setting a PB of 65.27.

Class P3 was no less competitive and finishing in third place it was nice to once again see Thomas Robinson guesting on the day in his immaculate 911 Carrera 3. Thomas set an admirable time of 68.00 seconds dead. Second place went to Stephen Jory in his slick shod Porsche 944 after achieving 67.08. The winner of P2 was Wayne Eason in his Boxster 2.5 after also setting a PB and new P3 record of 65.19. Incredibly, he was fifth fastest Porsche overall!

There was only one competitor in Class P4 which was Stuart McLean in a two-litre 924 but setting a great time nonetheless and managed a time of 69.66.

Many thanks to Laura Wardle for once again coordinating our appearance at Harewood – it is much appreciated. Thank you also to Andy for providing the report above – the original, with photographs, can be seen on the Porsche Club Speed Championship facebook page – and, last but not least, many happy returns from all at Porsche Club GB to Graham Rose who enjoyed a fantastic Porsche badge 60th birthday cake organised by Darren and Tracey Slater at Harewood.

Next round will be a sprint at Goodwood race circuit near Chichester on 4 August. See you all there!
